Rating: Summary: A great gift book Review: I've given this book to just about everyone I know who has a kid, and it never fails to please both the kids and the adults. I love that caterpillar! "The Very Busy Spider" is also a winner.
Rating: Summary: Eric Carle is the best kids' author since Dr. Seuss! Review: My daughter and I discovered Eric Carle by accident, but since then have created our own library of his books. His illustrations are lovely and just perfect for the stories told. I never get tired of reading his books to my child, and as a parent that is a real joy! I highly reccommend this or any other Eric Carle book to any parent who has a creative or naturally inquisitive child who craves stimulation. Read and become a lifelong fan
Rating: Summary: Even entertains an infant!! Review: My son is just 1 year old. When I read about the hungry caterpillar, he sits down to listen. The hardcover pages mean he can play with the book on his own - and he does!! We've both had (and are having) a lot of enjoyment from this simple storybook
Rating: Summary: This board book version will delight even the youngest. Review: The board book version of this book will delight even the youngest children as they practice counting, learn the days of the week, and watch a (very hungry) caterpillar transform into a butterfly. Children love Carle's colorful illustrations, so check out some of his other books like The Grouchy Ladybug, The Very Busy Spider, and The Very Lonely Firefly
Rating: Summary: Never understood the charm; still don't Review: This is not one of my all-time favorite books. It strikes me as tedious, boring, and silly. I would never have bought it for my one-year-old.Unfortunately for me, a friend gave it to him for his birthday. Fortunately for him, though, Jack loves it. I rarely get out of it without at least three repetitions. The pictures are kind of pretty, in a modern art sort of way. A good book to give as a gift to someone else's child -- that way, you won't have to read it endlessly.
Rating: Summary: Very cute book Review: This book teaches basically, about life. It's neat to see the little egg on the leaf, and then the catepillar hatches on a Sunday. He then goes on eating various things, but he's "still hungry." So on Saturday, he eats a bunch, and I mean a BUNCH of junk and gets sick that evening. No wonder! Mixing salami with a lollipop, cake, ice cream and watermelon just doesn't make for a great outcome. But on Sunday, he eats another green leaf and feels much better. I think that says a lot about how important it is to eat good things. It's also fun to see how many of the colorful things the catepillar ate wind up as the color of his wings. My little one enjoys this book and we read it quite often. A classic.
Rating: Summary: Incredible open mindedness Review: Eric Carle is at it again. Here is a fantastic intro to sex and tolerance for all ages. Children are assaulted by sexual images everwhere they go and you want to make sure they develop a healthy and open attitude toward their sexuality. My favorite scene is where the caterpillar eats a page full of fruit, candy and other thing, resulting in a tummy ache. This teaches the lesson that excessive enthusiasm in sexual exploration, although highly pleasurable, has it's negative aspects. At the end, the caterpillar learns it's lesson. It is able to come to grips with its own gay orientation, symbolized by the rainbow butterfly.
Rating: Summary: A CLASSIC BOOK ON SEVERAL LEVELS Review: The Very Hungry Caterpillar is simply a classic of childrens literature because it does so many things in one little book. It teaches children about counting as the caterpillar slowly eats his way through multitudes of different foods. It teaches the days of the week, as each day passes and the caterpillar eats more and more...It can teach colors as each food is easily identified by it's colors such as the bright red apple. And it even teaches some beginning science as we see the caterpillar hatch from an egg...then build his cocoon, and emerge a beautiful little butterfly.
Carle spins this tale in a manner so easy for pre-K kids to understand and follow along with perfectly simple and colorful illustrations to complement the text. This book is one of my 2 year olds true favorites to read at story time. It's been around for quite awhile but this book is always a winner. All of Carle's books are highly recommended!
Rating: Summary: both my son and I love this book... Review: The unusual, bold illustrations, the simple text, as well as the "educational value" (counting, days of the week, etc.) make this one of my favourites.
My 21-month old son also loves it... especially sticking his fingers in the holes the caterpillar has left in the food (so do consider the board book if your child's the touchy-feely type!).
A book I like to read with my son regularly and one I like giving as a gift to other mommies - it's usually a hit with their babies / toddlers too.
Rating: Summary: My Son's Favorite Review: I don't know exactly what my two-year-old sees in this book, but he has had a special affinity for it since it was given as a gift a year ago. It may be the varying size of pages that he appreciates. The holes that represent where the caterpillar has eaten may also interest him. There is also a rythym to the text that may please his ears.
For me, I enjoy the artwork very much though I am not sure how the illustrations were done. Some of these appear to be made by pasting and photographing textured paper into leaves and a caterpillar. The book is also sturdy and has survived being carried around as my child's favorite book and a trip to the hospital where it comforted him.
