Rating: Summary: Not Rinaldi's best Review: This book did not meet the high expectations I have come to expect from Rinaldi. Had the book been written by another it might have received 4 stars from me, but this prolific writer has books that I would recommend above it. One of Rinaldi's skills as a historical writer has been her choice of historical events and concepts to explore within her novels and what aspect to explore within those contexts. In Break With Charity, and this is only one example, she discusses the Salem Witch Trial and offers her own suggestion for what could have happened. All the facts are correct but her imagination takes us far beyond what we have already heard. She addresses the topic of Mulattos that appear white in great detail in this book but in the context of being Thomas Jefferson's slave daughter. The entire screams "Thomas Jefferson wrote 'The Declaration of Independence' but he owned slaves." I do not think that this was news to anyone. I would recommend A Break With Charity, Cast Two Shadows, The Coffin Quilt and other Rinaldis long before I would recommend this particular book.
Rating: Summary: Not Enough Depth Review: While I do understand that this was a novel written for children, I feel that it didn't have enough depth and there were certain areas of the book which were unnecessary. It's just that although the subject of Thomas Jefferson's children is intriguing, A Wolf By The Ears didn't exactly present a compelling plot. While it did give an interesting viewpoint, it wasn't a truly enjoyable book to read.I give it two stars.

Rating: Summary: Wolf by the ears Review: Wolf By The Ears Wolf by the Ears is about a girl named Harriet Hemings. Harriet is the slave of Thomas Jefferson, but no one ever calls her a slave. She is treated better than most slaves. She loves living in her home, but her mother wants her to take her freedom when Jefferson offers it to her. She has to choose between her family, home, and friends or her freedom, but there is a problem most free black woman were mistreated and looked down at and if she stays and Jefferson dies she could be sold and mistreated there. Finally, Mister Randolph has a solution; she could pass, pretend that she is white. She is part white and could easily pass as a white, but she has to learn how to be white. Jefferson decides that Martha Randolph should teach Harriet how to be white. Martha isn't very happy about it at first. Harriet is very excited and nervous about passing, but her brother, Beverly, is mad about her passing he keeps telling her that she is leaving her race behind. She goes with Mister Petit to Gordon's Tavern and she learns that some white people had it worst then her. When the people in Gordon's Tavern talk to her like a white she knows she has successfully passed. I think it was a good book, but at parts it was very boring. It is a good book for people who like historical fiction. There are parts that I really wanted to skip through, but I couldn't because I needed to know what happened. It is a very good book though. I give it 4 stars.
Rating: Summary: Not WONDERFUL, but insightful and thoughtful Review: This book was good in some ways and bad in some ways. I think Rinaldi could've done better in writing this book because the romance stunk in it, but altogether it wasn't so bad. This book is about Harriet Hemings and her life at Monticello. She is a naive girl at the beginning of the book and blooms into a more wiser person at the end. I would suggest that you read every sentence word by word so you can understand what is going on.
Rating: Summary: real life time machine Review: I love historical fictions. I don't know why, but they just seem very interesting to me. I enjoy knowing about what went on in the past and Ann Rinaldi does a very good job of informing you of the past(An Acquaintance with Darkness is another good book of hers). It is a story of Harriet Hemings, a slave at Monticello in Virginia where she worked for Thomas Jefferson. She never wants to leave because of her connection to many things there, but yet she doesn't want to stay because if she does she will end up to hate it and she doen't want to do that. She is afraid to take her freedom before an unhappy event occurs on Monticello that changes her mind completely. Wolf by the Ears has an exciting plot that keeps you reading and reading until it feels really weird not to be reading it. Whenever I stopped reading this book I felt incomplete, like I was missing something because every time I had to stop reading I had gotten to a good part in the story. I would definitely recommend this to all readers.
Rating: Summary: Wolf By The Ears Review: Wolf By The Ears is a well written book by Ann Rinaldi. It shows some of the struggles of slavery. As harriet deals with the decision of wether or not to pass as a white, or even to take the freedom granted to her, you feel as though you are right there watching her. However, at some points in the book i got a litte bored and it seemed to move slowly. It is a great book and very educational but if you are looking for a fast moving book this is not the one to read.

Rating: Summary: Wolf By The Ears Review: This book was another well written book by Ann Rinaldi. She once again captures the struggles of a character in history. It shows some of the hardships of living as a slave. As Harriet deals with the decision of whether or not to pass as a white, or even to take the freedom granted to her, you feel as though you are right alongside her and watching her. It is a great book and very educational, but if you are looking for a fast moving book this is not the one to read. At some points it moves slowly and tends to get a little monotonous. I would still recomend that you read it because you will learn a lot about slavery and freedom.
Rating: Summary: Unbelievable Review: I love history, it's a fact all my friends know well. I'm 17 years old, and since I bought this book last year, I've read it about 5 or 6 times. I love it. Whenever I go to the bookstore I make sure to check if there are any new Ann Rindaldi books because she is so good at depicting the history. It was Wolf By The Ears that made me want to read more of her stuff. I highly, highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed.
