Rating: Summary: The Kid Who Could Of Made Pros Review: Seth and Jimmy became friends when Seth was walking by a park and he was watching Jimmy fielding baseball while his dad was hitting them to him. Jimmy saw him and asked Seth to come over and asked if u want to play and Seth said i really cant play. Jimmy said we can teach you. Then school starts and they both go to the same school. They try for the baseball team and they both made it on varsity. Every weekend they go to the park and practice baseball with Jimmy's dad. After there done practiceing Jimmy's dad gives them a drink. The next season starts the following year. When try outs start Seth powers the ball everwhere the coach put him on the jv team. The coach tells Seth after try outs and says i liked u better when you just made contact. Seth does better and he goes back to varsity in the middle of the season. Close to the end of the season they were fixing to play for the city champion. Just before todays before the game Jimmy's dad gave him his camaro and he drove it around at night today's before the game. Seth got a call at 1:38 am from Alex his friend from his team and he told Seth that Jimmy got in a car accident. Seth got to the hospital he was 10 feet away from Jimmy's room and he saw Jimmy's mom crying. Sharront got closer to Seth and said Jimmy is dead. The next day the coach asked if we should forfeit Wednesday game or play. Out of 18 or 21 players on the team said play. Play for Jimmy. They won that game but they lost the state champion 11-3.
Rating: Summary: Great book for some one intrigued by baseball Review: "Heart of a Champion" is beautifully composed by Carl Deuker. It is the #1 title for a reader who has a love for baseball. Deuker's love for baseball is portrayed in his easy-to-understand commentary of the baseball action. Probably written for ages 12-16, it is a book that sugar coats nothing about a baseball teenager's life in a small town. Jimmy is a boy dedicated to the sport of baseball.Jimmy often touched the people he played with. One was Seth to whom he sent a ball rolling to him at Henry Ford park and changed his life forever. They became the best of friends and were inseperable year-roundof themselves and the sport of baseball. The adventures they go through are amazing but they are up to you to read about!
Rating: Summary: If you even remotely like sports Review: A Review by Tyler Heart of a Champion is a good book, actually it's great book. Probably the best book I've ever read, I give it 5stars. This book was so real to life, and the struggles, heartaches, and pains a real friendship goes through. Seth and Jimmy both love the game of baseball, and everything about it, they both dream of playing in the Major Leagues. But Jimmy likes one thing inpaticular that some Major Leagues do, that will eventually break him. To find out what read the book. The ending to this story is what no one would expect, and that is how the whole book is, this is part of the reason the book is so good. The book was well written; all the conflicts seemed so real. Although there were a couple of scenes where I had to read it twice, to figure out whose talking or just what it meant. I would recommend this book to anybody who even remotely likes baseball or any sport.
Rating: Summary: A great second novel Review: Although not as original as his first novel, "On the Devil's Court," Carl Deuker has produced an excellent second novel in "Heart of a Champion." Darker in tone due to the death of the narrator's father, the alcoholism addressed in the book, and the ending, "Heart of a Champion" is also one of the best baseball novels I've ever read. The friendship between Seth and Jimmy is gripping, especially for those of us who have had friends more talented than we are. I read this novel in a single sitting, and found much the same sense of tension throughout the novel: if you love baseball, you're not going to be able to put this one down either.

Rating: Summary: Heart of a Champion Review: Brandon Hackman 2/3/03 Language arts 2Heart of a Champion By: Carl Dueker When you first pick up the book Heart of a Champion you will probably think it is just another story about a kid that just loves the game of baseball. But it isn't it is much more. It is a story more about friendship and trust than baseball. From the beginning of the story a kid named Seth is introduced as a very smart kid that loves to watch the game of baseball but never had a chance to learn how to play. He is a very smart kid. He lives with his mom. She is a very worried person. She keeps a look out for her son. I think she is like that because she lost her husband in a car accident 2 years earlier. One day when Seth was walking to the park he sees this kid and his dad getting ready to go play some ball. So Seth walks over to them and they ask if he wants to play to. Of course he doesn't back down from this offer so he goes out with them and plays some ball. Seth isn't the best baseball player you will ever see but he understands the game well enough that he is descent. The kid he is playing with is jimmy winter and he is a very good ball player. I think he is good because his dad pressures him through out the story to be the best baseball player in town. That is how Seth's baseball career began. He and jimmy would go to a batting cage every Saturday through out that whole winter and they played with each other all the way through high school. That is when they both started making some stupid choices. The story has many interesting conflicts that take place in it. On of the biggest conflicts they both encounter is when they meet a guy on there high school baseball team and he invites them over. They go out into the play house and Todd offers them both a beer. At first Seth turns down the beer but after awhile all three of them are drinking away. At about 12 o'clock when they leave they are both drunk and they take the bus home. When Seth gets home his mom is sleeping so he goes up stairs and hops into the shower. Then he goes and lays down to fall asleep. When he wakes up in the mourning his mom notices that he is looking pale so she asks his about what he was doing last night. She knows that he was out drinking but she doesn't punish him she just sits him down and talks to him about the angers of drinking. That is Just a brief description of the story heart of a Champion by Carl Dueker. As I have told you many different things about this book you should take my advice and take some time to read this book.
Rating: Summary: The Best Way to Let Kids Know They Aren't The Only Ones Review: Carl Deuker writes books that I feel touch areas that kids today live with.I've read Painting the Black and recently finished Heart Of A Champion; I feel that both of these books give kids an idea of what can happen and how they can deal with it, even if it isn't happening to them it might be happening to a friend they know and they don't know what to do, if they read these books i feel that they can get an idea of what they can do with the situation. The books not only touch on sports but also on the issues of everyday teen life and that's the kind of book that I think every teenager should be introduced to.
Rating: Summary: Amazing! Wonderfully written. The best book I've ever read! Review: Carl Deuker's book Heart of a Champion is outstanding. It has great baseball action, and the characters are fun and believable. It is touching, and is written so well that I end up reading it twice every time I pick it up. It was the best book I ever read. No matter what happens, you must read Heart of a Champion
Rating: Summary: Heart of a Champion is an interesting and exciting novel. Review: Heart of a Champion is a compelling novel about the lives of Seth and Jimmy, two best friends who share a common passion for baseball. Jimmy is a natural born baseball player, striving to one day play in the Major Leagues. With a strong push from his alcoholic father, he builds his skills and continues to persue his dreams. Unlike Jimmy, Seth is not a natural baseball player, but he tries his hardest and gives it his all to be the best baseball player he can be. Jimmy and seth continue to build their friendship and their playing skills from little league all the way through highschool. Jimmy and Seth were going strong and playing their best until they got involved with drinking. Seth stopped with his bad habit, but Jimmy wasn't as lucky. He was going down the same path of alcoholism that his father did. His drinking caused him to loose his life in a car crash right before the turning point of the story. Never a dull moment, this book is exciting and interesting. with all of the baseball dialect, I recommend this book for avid baseball loversfrom ages 11 to 14 years old. The themes and meaning behind the book make it the perfect novel for everyone.
