Summary: A Terrifying and Thought-Provoking Book
Review: When She Hollers is an excellent, thought-provoking thrilling, suspenseful book about heroism, tragedy, and loyalty. It is about a girl, whose stepfather abuses of her in different ways. The author, Cynthia Voigt, gives clear and splendid descriptions, you feel as if you are there. The book is narrated in third person.
It all begins in a house at breakfast time, but it is more like a battlefield. The family is also anything but normal. The mother is just there only preparing toast, and it almost seems like she doesn’t care at all if anything happens. The twins are always fighting, but the biggest fight is between the stepfather and the daughter.
The daughter is named Tish, our main character. Her stepfather is always bothering and insulting her. The stepfather is quite a strange character sometimes he is the worst and sometimes he is this kind, nice, helpful, understanding father. He only acts like this to confuse Tish.
Tish used to try to just ignore her stepfather but she got sick of it so she got a knife, her safety knife she calls it. She always has her knife near her, so if her stepfather comes close to attack her, she will use the knife to defend herself.
The fighting between the stepfather and Tish is very violent, Tish has her knife in her hand raised to her stepfather. Then the stepfather throws the table to her. The stepfather decides to calm down so Tish also does.
Tish helps her mom to clean the mess then she leaves for school. That same day when she returns…
This story is not based on a true story, or a biography, but the story as well as the characters are very believable and realistic.
I don’t recommend this book to a small child for its use of bad words and because of the violent story line. The story is violent and pretty hard for a child to understand. For me it was an excellent, strong, catchy book.

Review: When She Hollers was a good book. The novel brought me closer as if I was dealing with the sexual abuse of Tish's stepfather and the ignorance of her mother. I felt like I was Tish and I wanted to scream at the mother for not believing me, when Tish said Tonnie was abusing her. Cynthia Voigt made the book for non-stop reading because you cannot put it down until you read the last page. When She Hollers is about a girl named Tish, who is getting sexually abused by her stepfather and when she confronts her mother about it she doesn't believe her. If you want to know more about the book you just have to find it at your local library or buy it online. If you need a inspirational book, this is it!

'When She Hollers' is a book based on an abused teen who learns how to cope with her abuse. The main character is a girl named Tish. Her stepfather Tonnie sexually abuses her. Tish decided to deal with her situation by getting what she calls a "survival knife." She gets caught with the knife at school and Tonnie is called. Tish Runs away from the school in fright that Tonnie is going to "deal with her." She remembers one of her friends tell her that her dad was a lawyer and that he could help. Tish decided to take the help. She runs to the lawyer and he helps her sort through all of the emotion and chaos. After her visit with the laywer, Tish could go home and face Tonnie knowing that she would be safe.
I definately reccomend this book. Although it is difficult to read in the beginning because it is quite confusing, if you be patient with it, you will definately enjoy it.
