Rating: Summary: Disappointing. Review: I was expecting more from this book. Apparently the best writing was on the back. Ann was a great character and I was very grateful to see a girl with such an independent nature. The plot was a good idea but it could have been carried out more fluently. At points it lagged. Also, The cliff-hanger was to much. You become attached to a character who got abused the whole story then was left once again on her own. This book would be perfect with a sequel, otherwise to short and no closure.
Rating: Summary: Z for Zachariah not a bad book Review: I have read most of the negative reviews on this book and I think that the most popular comment was "unrealistic". I have studied human nature in school so I knew that this situation is possible. This book was supposed to be disturbing! It is supposed to make you realize how cruel human nature could be. Shakespeare said that "security is morals greatest enemy" so if you don't like to know what the world is really like than don't read these kind of books! This book may also require some maturity so don't read it if you can't handle it. Anyway, here is my review... This is a story about human nature. It takes place after a nuclear war that has left Ann Burden alone in her safe valley. She thinks she is the last person on earth until a man arrives. Several things happen which dramatically change the relationship between Ann and the stranger. This book seems to be showing the harsh side of human nature, but I think it is very realistic. I though about what I would do in the same situation and I can't honestly say that I would have made a better, more humane, decisions. I'm not sure that this is the best book in the genre, but is worth reading to help you understand life better and make better decisions later on. Read this book for a different perspective on life. Thanx 4 reading this!
Rating: Summary: Z for Zachariah Review: This was a book that made me want to keep reading. I'm not the type of person that reads a lot but I read this one in 4 days. This book made me think about what life would be like if I were all alone in the world.
Rating: Summary: Where There's Life... Review: This book was assigned to us for Year 10 English. It's one of the many stories that imagines life after the nuclear holocaust. An American girl called Ann Burden is alone in a valley. A haven protected from radiation, it is the perfect place to survive. The novel is written like a diary. One day Ann writes of a stranger who comes to the valley. He wears what looks like a greenish space suit, which protects him from radiation. Who is the man? Is he friend or foe? Ann asks these questions in her diary. She makes friends with the man, whose name is Loomis. But there is something sinister and secretive about him... When I first heard of this book I found the idea of a valley being free of radiation a bit improbable. Two years earlier I had read "On the Beach" (1957) by Nevil Shute. That book imagined everyone dying from radiation, no matter where they were. No one survived. Understandably I was depressed. "Z For Zachariah" is a bit more hopeful, but I think there have been other books of the same genre that are better. In 1984 "Z For Zachariah" was dramatized for television, and starred Anthony Andrews as Mr Loomis. For some reason the story was set in England instead of America.
Rating: Summary: This is a GREAT book! Review: This book is VERY detailed. The thought of nuclear war, being the last people on the planet(although the author never says anything about the rest of the world.)In my own opinion,it should be made into a movie. It has an eerie effect on the reader.I mean, how would you like it if you were the last person alive?I still think she shouldve found more survivors other than Mr.Loomis.Its just not right. But anybody should like this book.It will open peoples eyes on life and what it could be like after a holocaust.Id right more but Ive said my peace.
Rating: Summary: This was my favorite book. Review: I read this book over 15 years ago and I still think about it. It makes you think what could happen. I recommend this book for everyone over the age of 12!
Rating: Summary: I think the book is very good and everyone should read it! Review: The good thing about this book is it starts out right in the action, thats what I like about books. This book starts you out in a families valley that they live in. Everything is going well when suddenly a strange green cloud peaks at the tip of the valley. The parents of Ann Burden(the main-character telling the story) tell her that they are going out of the valley and into town to see what happened. They go out but they never come back. But before they left, her brother jumped into the back of the truck without the parents knowing. The dog loves the boy so much that it runs after him and it never comes back either until the middle of the book. But while this is all going on she is getting a long all by herself when a figure keeps getting closer and closer to the valley. She investigates to find it to be a scientist who has a biochemical suit. It protects him from the radiation. She hides in a cave because she is afraid that he might do something to her. It is a very good book to read. I think the book is very good and keeps your attention. The only bad thing is that it is not a good book for someone who is not over 12 because you really can't understand some of the technical terms but thats about it. I recommend this book to any student interested in a science-fiction novel and it would interest anybody else who would be interested in what the world may very well be like in the next century. I also recommend this book to teachers because they might be interested in sharing this book with the class. It is a real mindboggler in how the plot takes you right into the story.
Rating: Summary: A quick explanation Review: For those of the readers of this book who were offended by it, there was no harm meant. Mr. Loomis was meant to be (a little) mentally unstable and totally cruel and controlling. If this has upset anyone, I am really very sorry.
Rating: Summary: I really liked the book. Review: It is so unpredictable you never know what is going to happen unless you read on.
Rating: Summary: I Liked the book. Review: This book is very exciting and you never knew what was going to happen next.Ann was very brave putting up with what Loomis was doing to her.
