Rating: Summary: Great discussion base for middle schoolers Review: As a middle school teacher of literature, I have found this book very helpful in stimulating pertinent discussions in my classroom. The plot centers around a high school where two boys who have a history of being bullied plot a revenge to the boys who have bullied them. Told from the points of view of several members of the community, the contemporary and controversial story unfolds. I have used this book in small groups to stimulate discussion as to the causes of school violence, and the ways to prevent it. My students, across the board, were stimulated by this book, and read it without hesitation. Todd Strasser writes believably and compellingly for his secondary school audience. I recommmend this book for adults to share with teens, having had the experience of profound discussions.
Rating: Summary: should be required reading Review: This book should be required reading in middle and high school. Through the points-of-view of the many people affected by a fictional school shooting, the book successfully examines the dynamics of bullying and peer pressure that can culminate in school violence. These are issues that must be discussed in ordr to prevent them from happening in the future. The book moves along quickly and offers a lot to think about. It captures the minds of those who are bullied and those who do the bullying, how families can not know what is going on in their own homes and how our gun culture can make violence seem like an acceptable option.
Rating: Summary: Give a Boy A Gun Review: Give a Boy a Gun is a great book. This is the only book that I read over 100 pages a day. This book is for teenagers and adults, it is not for little kids. It is the best book I've ever read. Kirkus Reviews says" Vived, distressing, and all too real."It is about two kids at a school shooting. Their names are Brenden and Gary. They get bullied by football players, and they finally retaliate. Give a Boy a Gun is written by Todd Strasser, my favorite author. He has written many award-winning books. I have read two of his books.
Rating: Summary: To Give A Boy A Gun Review: To Give a Boy a Gun by Todd Strasser is about these two kids who hate life, and their school. The kids there torment them, and they're sick of it. At their school there's a big dance, Gary and Brendan have something else in mind other than dancing. They booby trapped the doors with bombs, and chained everyone in. They had ski masks on and shot of many rounds of ammunition. The kids were hysterical and panicking. Some teachers tried to stop them, and they shot him. The police, their parents, a physiologist and the principal came over the loud speaker and tried to talk them out of it. They even dropped a tiny camera down. The boys went around tying all the bigger boy's hands together and making the girls sit by the door. They then found the kids who made their lives miserable and tormented them: holding the gun to their head, saying crude things, kicking them. Sam, the one who picked on them the worst, they shot in the knees. If Gary and Brendan's only friend, Allison, wasn't there, Sam could of bleed to death. Allison wasn't supposed to be there, and the boys didn't want her to get hurt. She took her belt off and another boys belt and tied them around Sam's knees. Gary shot himself, and Brendan is in a coma from the boys beating him up. I would recommend this book to anyone 13 and up, boys or girls. It's a very disturbing story, you start the book off with the boys suicide notes. The story reveals itself as little commentaries by students, teachers, parents, family, and neighbors are said. It's graphic, and frightening, but I would definitely recommend this to teenagers. It's scary that if you tease a kid enough that they could go to that extreme and it makes you realize that it happens.
Rating: Summary: DONT GIVE A BOY A GUN!! Review: Give a Boy a Gun is about two teenage boys, Brendan Lawlor and Gary Searle who don't exactly fit in at high school. Their only true friend Allison and was also Gary's on and off girlfriend. I like how the author captured you in the moment of suspense. For example, when they had the school hostage you didn't know what they were going to do next like if they were going to kill anyone or just hurt them. However the beginning of the story was a little tedious. Classmated kept talking about their past and all the events that led up to when Brendan and Gary snapped. Brendan was the mastermind behind it all and Gary just followed along and did what Brendan did. I would reccomend this book to anyone who is interested in realistic and suspenseful dramas about high schook tragedies like hostage taking. I think you would have to be the kind of person who can follow a confusing book because for me the beginning was so hard to understand, but when it came to the hostage part it became more clear. I learned from the novel that everyone has their breaking point, and anyone could easily push you over the edge of doing something you will regret, just like whe happened to Brendan and Gary.
Rating: Summary: Great book Review: Give a boy a gun is one of my favorite books after reading Give a Boy a Gun. Todd Strasser has writing another truly splendid book. Strasser is trying to tell the readers that you shouldn't pick on people. In result something would happen like in columbine. I also loved how the writing style. It is writing in a series of entries from witnesses of the event.
Rating: Summary: Give a Boy a Gun...then watch what he'll do with it Review: "Give a Boy a Gun" is an amazing way to look at school diversity. It is about 2 guys in high school who get picked on way to much. It finally builds up and they feel they have no choice but to react with violence. Todd Strasser used amazing real life situation and details to put the daily life of someone who gets picked on into the readers mind. It is hard to read this book without shedding a tear. The tone of this book is definitelty a more serious tone. I highly recomend this novel.
Rating: Summary: Keep guns away from kids!!! Review: Two boys with the same interests and are a little different from everyone else. Well in this town in the book "Give a Boy a Gun" by Todd Strasser that won't pass. Just because they don't play football or atleast go to the games they are made fun of at school by the kids who do. Brenden and Gary are both interested in the same things like gory games, guns, drugs and alcohol. The guns part doesn't come in until later though. Also the other thing the two have in common is that they are both picked on at school. They both get so fed up with it. They get guns from neighbors houses and booby-trap a school dance. Then it all begins what they do at the dance and how it all turns out. To find out this information i will leave it up to you to read the book and find out. I highly recommend it.
