Pages: 189
The summer of 1960 changed everything in the life of Hattie Owen, a twelve year old girl who has always lived in her small town of Millerton. She has never known anything beyond her comfortable life at her family's boarding house, where she doesn't have to worry about anything. But when her unknown Uncle Adam, who she has never heard of, shows up to live with Hattie's Nana and Papa, because his school for the mentally disabled closed down Hattie is forced to face many new challenges in just one summer. Such as "babysitting Adam" and making new friends.
This was a wonderful book of friendship, courage and teaching. I liked how the author had many surprises throughout the book. I could not put it down! I recommend this book to kids and adults because it is a heartwarming book of true friendship.

Summary: Wonderful Return to the Small Town of the 50's and 60's
Review: Living in a small town, Hattie must deal with gossip, and a range of emotions when it is discovered that her uncle is different. He has a mental disability. Family issues are discussed and ways to deal with problems are reviewed in a way that holds the readers interest. This is a fine "family values" read for middle grades through junior high.

Summary: A fantastic novel...
Review: Martin has written a truly beautiful story. If you loved "Winn-Dixie" and "Ruby Lavender" you will be moved by this novel, too. Hattie and Adam will touch your heart. A perfect mother/daughter book club choice. An excellent summer read, especially for girls 5th grade and up...and have the tissue handy.

Summary: An Astonishing Surprise
Review: the book "A Corner of the Universe" was an amazing book. It gave you a perfect feeling of being there. the book is about a young 12 year old girl named Hattie Owen who has a 26 year old mentally ill uncle named Adam which she never knew about until his school closes and he is sent to live with her strict grandparents, Nana and Papa. It is a wonderful story describing the suffering life of a 12 year old, and the crazy mind of her uncle. It was superior to any other book I've read, and I highly suggest you read it.

Summary: A Corner of the Universe
Review: The book A Corner of the Universe by Ann M. Martin is a book about a kindhearted twelve-year-old girl named Hattie Owen. This book takes place in the summer of 1960 and is a heart-warming novel, which will bring joy, laughter, and tears to your heart. Hattie Owen is a sweet girl yet has many troubles dealing with life because her perspective on life is different than many others, but Hattie loves her small town and boarding house that she lives in with her mother and her father. It is isolated from the rest of the world and Hattie feels safe and doesn't know much about everyday issues people go through. Hattie never could have imagined a summer more action-packed than this particular summer. When her twenty one year old Uncle Adam whom Hattie has never met before comes for a surprise visit to stay at Hattie's grandparents house for the first time, (because his residential school shut down) Hattie learns from her mother that he has mental problems, and that he is Manic depressive. Also that friends and relatives are embarrassed about the way he acts because everyone around him ridicules him. Family and relatives have denied Hattie's uncle's existence for many years but now it will be revealed to Hattie and she will be informed after all these years that her perfect life has many secrets hidden inside and is not so perfect after all. Hattie learns after spending quite some time with him that she and Adam are quite alike and she has to cope with him in some way. But Hattie also takes into consideration that dealing with him wont be easy and that it will take time to appreciate. He is looked down upon in every way and hated by all. Hattie takes it upon herself to help him, to bond with him and to find his true inner self while seeking for her own. Uncle Adam becomes for of a child like friend to Hattie than an Uncle figure in her life. Hattie realizes that she just has to "lift the corner of the universe" for him and open his paths a little wider so people can understand him better. Hattie is one of the few people who appreciate Adam for who he is and she is the only one who can see deep down inside of him. She feels that he has a lot of courage in facing the world and life's difficulties. This is an inspirational novel that gives hope and understanding for life. People don't often experience this exact same situation in life but we all face difficulties and this novel is good for children around Hattie's age because you can relate to her in different ways. Recommended for middle school ages, 12-14 years of age. This book will take you through the ups and downs of life just like a bumpy path. It sends the message that if we fall along the way we just get back up and try again, never give up hope.

Review: The book A Corner Of The Universe was an excellent book. Hattie Owen goes through many life challenging experiences. Having Adam as her uncle makes it even more difficult. Hattie Owen makes new friends and looses them too. The author creates an interesting plot that keeps you reading. She also creates many aspects of the characters that others can relate to. I found there to be very little parts that I didn't understand because of the excellent writing the author used. Throughout this book good and bad things happen. People make new friends, meet new people, and discover their family secrets. Overall, I truly love this book, and would recommend it to anyone.

But now it's closing, so he is movig in with Hattie's grandparents or Adam's parents. He teaches Hattie about life and how she can lift the corners of her universe.

This book is one of the best books I have ever read. Adam made me feel good. He talked a lot and he talked really fast.He was always jumping and smiling. He made me feel like nothing bad could happen in the world. When I was reading this book, I could also lift the corners of the universe.

Summary: This book shows you to think twice
Review: This book showed me how much we, have to learn about ourselves. In reading this story, I realized how people were and are treated with mental disabilities. Ann M. Martin was able to show you how a girl's uncle was treated, through her eyes. A Corner of the Universe is a realistic fiction book.
Hattie figured that it was going to be another lonely summer, until Adam came. Every summer Hattie spent home with her boarders because her only friend goes to a summerhouse. Then she found out her uncle, who she never knew existed, was going to come back to live. Adam's school was closing down so he had to move back with his parents. Hattie didn't care what people thought of him, she was going to love him and treat him normally no matter what. She ends up finding both good and bad qualities in Adam. Not only does she meet her uncle Adam, she gets to meet two new girls.
I would rate this book a four. While reading this book, I could feel every emotion. Between parts I would feel both hurt and anger. Throughout the book I talked back to the characters. There were parts I didn't agree with and others that I would keep with me. Thinking about having a corner of the universe has changed how I feel about myself and others.
