Rating: Summary: wonderful & fritening Review: I first read this in 5th gread. Now two years later I still think it is wonderful. it scared me so much since i live in a house with 4 flights of stairs. i have read all of sleators books and i thing this is one of the top three. the others would be Intersteller Pig and the writen in a diary style about the diffrent levles of the world (sorry i can't think of it's name). anyone who likes Sci-Fi should read this but i warn you its scary.
Rating: Summary: house of stairs Review: I give the House of Stairs a three star rating because it is very creative. The fact that the story takes place in a house filled with nothing but stairs proves my point. The characters in the story each have their own personality, which makes you feel as if you are in the house also. The story has a lot of suspense and leaves you wondering if someone is going to fall down the stairs or starve to death. You never want to put the book down after you read the first page. Overall, the story was great, but the reason I gave this a three star rating is all because of the ending. It is hard to understand and doesn't make a lot of sense. It leaves you thinking why would they want to do that? As far as I know, there is not a sequel to answer that question, so the story lind of leaves you hanging. If the ending had been different, I would have probably given this book a five star rating. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes science fiction. Even though it isn't like normal science fiction with aliens, the future, and robots, it is definitely out of this world. It is a great book for people in sixth and seventh grade because it is based on people who are about that age, but anyone can read it and still enjoy it. This is a short book that you can finish in a weekend, so hurry up and get this book to read this weekend!
Rating: Summary: memories of my own adolescence Review: I had to find this book because all these years it stuck with me. The writing is good, not outstanding, but it is the "feel" of the book that made me look it up many years later. It is ominous, eerie, and totally out of the ordinary. This was a great book for teenagers back in the early 80's, and many of todays teens would probably enjoy it ...but back then we didnt have video games, cable tv, and the internet to command our attention, kids today are exposed to more, earlier than we ever were....so they may find the story "passe". it depends on the child. Rereading it again took me back to a time when i could spend all day Sunday looking through my books, deciding which one I wanted to read, going to my ( now deceased) grandmother's house and reading on her porch swing, and many other fleeting memories...It was a great experience, something one can only get from books!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Book! Review: I just finished reading this book a couple of days ago while I was reading "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding. This book was a great compaanion novel to "Lord of the Flies". Much of the character symbolism was very similar from each book and it helped in understanding some of the characters in both books while looking at them from two different points of veiw, one from the characters thoughts and actions in extereme isolation in "House of Stairs", and from the sole actions of each character in "Lord of the Flies." I strongly suggest this book to any reader
Rating: Summary: Great Book - Lesson Learned! Review: I read "House of Stairs" when I was in high school - It was actually in our school library. I decided I wanted to reread it, so I ordered it from Amazon.com. I'm delighted to say that its really held up well over the years. Young (and not so young) readers of today will still find the book fascinating and unable to put down. I'm surprised that sociology and psychology classes aren't using it for required reading.
Rating: Summary: This book has sat in the back of my mind for 20yrs Review: I read this book about 20 yrs ago. I can remember checking it out at the library. I can remember being totally engrossed. I can remember the stairs and the food machines. All of the details are gone, but I can remember exactly how it felt to read it. Whenever anyone asks me for a young adult recommendation I think, "I wish I could remember the title of that book. I'm remodeling my home and I did a search for "stairs." There it was. It must have been a great book if I can still feel it 20 yrs later.
Rating: Summary: A book that stays with you Review: I read this book almost twenty years ago. I had forgotten the title and the author, but the substance of the story has always stayed with me and I've often thought about it. I just recently rediscovered the book info and plan on buying another copy, this time for my son. I would highly recommend this book to just about anyone. It is a fascinating read and extremely thought provoking.
Rating: Summary: The Cube for Children Review: I read this book in 5th grade and it blew my mind. Thinking back on it, I wonder how appropriate it is for children. But give it some credit, it's a good way to introduce children to the realm of psychology and conspiracy theory. Even as a senior in college I reflect back on the psychology of the novel and search for new ways where violence can be necessary for survival... but can it really triumph end all? Read this book and find out!
Rating: Summary: The House of Stairs Review: I read this book off of a list for school and I really enjoyed it. I talked to some of my friends about it and they said that they had heard that it was kind of creepy. I don't know where they got that story because I thought that it was really good. In, The House of Stairs, five sixteen-year old orphans are blindfolded and lead to the 'House of Stairs' one by one. It is a large room without walls, only endless flights of stairs that lead no where. The only thing in this expanse of stairs is the red machine. The children, Oliver, Blossom, Abigail, Peter and Lola will discover how to get food out of the machine. The machine is everything to them... it keeps them alive with food. They rely on the machine... but will they do anything... and everything to get that food?
Rating: Summary: A Great Book Review: I read this book right after I finished Interstellar Pig. While Interstellar Pig was a very entertaining book, I wasn't expecting the House of Stairs. It is by far the best William Sleator book, and I would reccomend it to anyone who liked his other books. If you haven't read any of his books, you should, and this is a good one to start with.
