Rating: Summary: My favorite Review: This was my favorite out of the series. The character is great and really easy to relate to. Garth Nix is a fabulous author and I look forward to reading many other of his books
Rating: Summary: An avid 11-year-old reader - Review: I, of course, started off reading Mr. Garth Nix's books with Sabriel. Sabriel was extremely imaginative, with Nix creating an entirely new world with dark creatures, extreme magic, and very realistic characters. Lirael was indeed very good, but I just think that it was a mite worse than Sabriel. While in Sabriel Mr. Nix keeps the point of view soly on Sabriel, and where Sabriel was, and what Sabriel was doing, etc, in Lirael, Garth Nix first starts off from Lirael's perspective for perhaps 150 pages, than turns to Prince Sameth (Sabriel/Abhorsen and King Touchstone's son) for a couple of chapters, than back to Lirael, and so on and so forth. While this was necessary to keep the plot going, I sort of disliked that just as I was settling in and really starting to like reading from Lirael's view, he ends a chapter and starts with Prince Sameth. Otherwise, this novel was fantastic, and I am searching for the next book in the series - Abhorsen. A good summer read for young readers such as I.
Rating: Summary: Abhorsen trilogy Review: by skipping away from Sabriel, I was afraid I woudl hate this book, but after meeting Lirael and following her through the Clayr's Galcier, you start to empathise with her as well.. i can't reccomend this series highly enough!
Rating: Summary: A Beautiful Book!! Review: This is the sort of book you can read over and over again. In my opinion it is the best in the series. Lirael is the best character I have come across.
Rating: Summary: BETTER THAN THE FIRST ONE! Review: LIRAEL IS A DAUGHTER OF THE CLAYR THAT FEELS UTTERABLY ALONE AND NEGLECTED. SHE IS WITHOUT THE SIGHT AND LOOKS DIFFRENT THAN ANY OTHER DAUGHER. THIS BOOK STARTS OFF A LITTLE SLOW, WITH LIRAEL TRYING TO KILL HERSELF. BUT DON'T WORRY, THIS BOOK IS NOT DEPPRESING AT ALL. LIRAEL BECOMES A LIBRIAN, BUT VENTURES OFF INTO LOCKED ARES OF THE LIBRARY AND DISCOVERS SOME FRIGHTNING THINGS. SHE "CREATES" THE DISREPUTABLE DOG, WHO BECOMES HER FAITHFUL COMPANION. BUT SOON LIREAL IS IS FACED WITH A ADVENTURE WITH OVERWHELMING ODDS. SAM IS THE OTHER MAIN CHARECTER. THE ONLY SON OF SABRIEL AND TOUCHSTONE, HE TRYS TO BECOME AN ABHORSEN, THINKING IT IS HIS PATH. BUT UNABLE TO EVEN LOOK AT THE BOOK OF THE DEAD, IT SEEMS IT IS HOPELESS. HIS PROBLEMS GROW WORSE WHEN NICK,HIS FRIEND WHO IS UNWILLING TO BELIVE IN MAGIC, IS CAUGHT UP IN A PLAN WITH HEDGE, A DANGEROUS NEOCROMANCER. SAM'S JOURNEY TO RESCUE HIS FRIEND BECOMES DANGEROUS. THESE TWO STORIES INTERTWINE TOGETHER TO MAKE A STUNNING CLIMAX TO THE SECOND BOOK IN THE TRILOGY.
Rating: Summary: Thought-provoking and engrossing Review: I came across this book by chance, tucked discreetly into a shelf at a local book fair. It sounded like a breezy, run-of-the-mill fantasy story when I first began it but I became so engrossed in what was happening that I finished it in less than 3 days. The premise, as you probably have read, is that Lirael is desperate to recieve the Sight. Because no Clayr her age is without it she feels like an outcast. The desperation of Lirael is so sad and somehow a little disturbing. But eventually it helps her to discover more and more about herself. Later you will see that Lirael is gradually growing into her position in life more and more due to the help of her aquaintance, the Disreputable Dog (who I should mention is absolutely hilarious and very blunt). All around the descriptions are amazing, the premise is completely original, centered mainly around the coming of age of first Lirae, and then Sam (and of course there is always Mogget). And I highly suggest (if you are anything like me) that it's very interesting to read Lirael and then Sabriel. At least, that's what I did.
Rating: Summary: For everyone and anyone who's ever felt left out... Review: Garth Nix's second book in his Old Kingdom trilogy is a real winner. Set in the same world as the first book in the trilogy, you first meet fourteen - year - old Lirael at the Clayr's Glacier. She lives among a large community of women who can see into the future, but she is two years past the average age for gaining the Sight. Also, she looks different than the rest of her loosely related cousins, having black hair and pale skin. Prince Sameth, the son of Sabriel and Touchstone, is deathly (no pun intended) afraid of his increasing duties to defend the Old Kingdom from the Dead in life after a nearly fatal encounter with a necromancer. However, he never has a good opportunity to talk to his busy mother about this, and lives in fear of The Book of the Dead, which contains the lore and findings of all the Abhorsens since the Charter, which is the main magical force in the Old Kingdom, was woven. These two are characters that anyone can relate to. Most people have felt like they don't fit in at one time or another - Lirael is an interesting metaphor for the isolation that occurs in school - and it's easy to feel sympathetic to the case of Sameth, who is so scared of letting his parents down that he can't talk to them about not wanting to be Abhorsen when his mother retires. Many other characters make the book special. The Disreputable Dog, Lirael's magical companion, adds both a mysterious and humorous note to the book. The always - cynical Mogget, companion to the Abhorsens, is a funny addition to the book. Overall, Lirael is a story about finding out who you really are and learning that it's not so bad to be yourself.
Rating: Summary: LIRAEL-GARTH NIX Review: Lirael is one of the descendants of the Clayr, a race of Seers that live in a sacred glacier. But Lirael knows something is wrong with her: she has black hair, unlike the other Clayr; and she still doesn't have the Sight! She plans to run away until one of her elders have a vision that foretells Lirael doing something great... A wonderful read for anyone that has ever felt lonely or out of place! Read it's prequel, "Sabriel", and it's sequel, "Abhorsen".
Rating: Summary: LIRAEL-GARTH NIX Review: This is the story of Lirael, a young woman whom is expected to become a seer. But when she finds she doesn't have the Sight, she goes to find what she really is. On the way she realizes that her destiny holds a lot of responsibilities, and that she must stop an evil necromancer from bringing a sort of rogue fifth element to earth... Wonderful! A delight to read! The prequel is "Sabriel", and the sequel is "Abhorsen".
Rating: Summary: A diliberating Sequel!! Review: I give this book a low five because I have a few grips about this book, but its still a five. Finally Garth Nix explains what separates the Old Kingdom and Ancelstierre. He gives us a brief explanation of the nine and what they had to do with the charter stones, which by the way, was truly unique. I truly love Lirael, she was a daughter of the Clayr who tried so desperately to have the sight. She didn't want to be a misfit because she was so unlike the other members of the Clayr. Garth really portrayed her character well. All in all, this book had pretty much keep up my interest. Now, my grips on the book. I hated the fact that this book totally took place 14 years into the future after Sabriel. We find out that Touchstone & Sabriel are now married with kids!!! What happened during the 14 years? Are we ever going to find out? I probably wouldn't be interest about what happened during the 14 years, but I hate to read books where favorite characters are talking about brief adventures that happened in the past that weren't in a published book. Another grip is the kids of Touchstone and Sabriel. Prince Sameth is a total wimp and his sister is a spoiled brat!! I totally hated reading about them especially Sameth until he meet up with Lirael in the end. He ended up being a different character but I still didn't like him. Other than my grips about this book I feel this is a good story and well written. I feel Garth Nix had a good Trilogy on this hands. Now, onward to Abhorsen the third book!!!
