Rating: Summary: Skip this book; read PiHKAL instead Review: This book was first published in 1971 and I read it in 1974, when I was 12. I've kept the book all these years and recently pulled it down off the shelf and re-read it. Now I wonder why its been sitting around gathering dust; I should have dumped it back when I was 12. As an adolescent, this book presented an oftentimes scary introduction to the drug culture, especially for a 12-year old who had never been exposed to "the scene". The front cover claims it is "a real diary". After reading the book again at 35 and, especially, after having done the drugs that "Alice" writes about, I realize what an incredible piece of propaganda it really was/is. "Smoke a joint and the next thing you'll know, you'll be doing heroin." "Take acid, and you'll wind up in a mental ward just like Alice." Why not tell the truth? "Smoke a joint, and you'll probably raid the refrigerator and veg out in front of the television." Nothing more. You won't have an uncontrollable urge to suddenly stick a needle in your vein, and I sure didn't have a burning curiosity to try something bigger/better/faster/more. Its true that drugs can tear your life apart. They can cost you your self-respect, your job, your house, even your freedom. But my experience has been that some drugs can be done responsibly, leaving you with good feelings and life-altering insights. I have a thirteen year old son, and I have honestly shared my drug history with him. (None of this "I never inhaled" nonsense) That history includes marijuana, cocaine, and hallucinogens. I haven't done pharmaceuticals in years (wouldn't even know where to look for 'em these days) but I gave my son the truth: here's what drugs do to you; they feel this way; this is what's bad, and this is what's good about them. I think all parents owe that to their kids: the truth. And that's what is missing in this book: an honest account of drugs and their effects on your self, your life, your soul. Instead, you are handed a patronizing "true story" from the publisher. Don't believe it! (I'll bet they never inhaled, either.)
Rating: Summary: I'm headin' for San Fran Review: When I read this book, I was deeply inspired. Now I have the courage to go to San Francisco and open up my own boutique. Except the sodomy, I would like to have the same experiences as "Alice."
Rating: Summary: About a girl who was trippedon acid without her knowing Review: I girl, Alice attends a party where LSD is put in her coca-Cola. From then on she tries everthing from weed to heroine. she basically ruins her life, runa away from home, etc...
Rating: Summary: Go Ask Alice Review: This is an excellent book for young adults dealing with drugs or just curious about what the effects of drugs are. This is a story about a young girls' struggle with drugs and how in the end, it ends up taking her life. I really want to know more information on the book, so if you know anything, please e-mail me.
Rating: Summary: Very funny! Review: I've read this book so many times, and it never fails to amuse me. True story? More like pure claptrap. I know it's important to warn kids of the (potential) dangers of drug use, but even a twelve year old with some common sense is going to read this and giggle. Jay's Journal is another good example of this trashy stuff--but I sure do wish I could write trash this well. Loved it then, and I love it now.
Rating: Summary: Excellent, wonderful, insightful, mysterious Review: I love this book so much, I'm not usually the kind of person to pick up a book and not put it down but this book changed me totally. This book is about real life. People like to read about real life. Or to see something their life is not, even though sometimes it might be kind of morbid or unusual, we all wonder what we would be like if we were someone else. When you read this book you become the girl, you are entised to keep reading and reading and reading and when the books over you wish it wouldn't have ever ended. I give this book two thumbs up.
Rating: Summary: TRUE Review: This book is our story. We might have had different experiences and made different decisions, but it is still ours. If anyone reading this has ever been so far into drugs they couldn't see anything but blackness they will know what I mean. Alice's diary mirrors our thoughts to some extent. We all must face the things she did. Maybe not on the same level, but for those of us who were on the same level, the story was riveting. Nice to read some one else's experiences. it helps
Rating: Summary: Is there a movie to this book? Review: I heard that there was a movie to this book? I read this book a couple of years ago. I hope that other people will read it and someone will make a movie if they all ready haven't.
Thanks
Rating: Summary: Everyone should read Go Ask Alice. Review: This is a very good book which lets you know the dangers of drug use, but it doens't come right out and tell you "don't do drugs" and list why you shouldn't use drugs. It,instead, is the diary of a teenage girl as she becomes a drug user. It tells of the harsh reality of drug use, but leaves you to form your own conclusion as to use or not use. This book is more convincing than any of the "Just say no"-type videos you'll see in school, because you realize that drug use isn't limited to certain classes of people or certain 'types' of people; the author's story is one that could happen to anyone: your best friend, your neighbor, even you. Even if you've never considered using drugs, read this book...it has value that extends to all sorts of areas in life.
Rating: Summary: Go Ask Alice Review: I am a 15 year old student from Ireland , I was first introduced to Go Ask Alice when I was 12, and personally I think every young person should read this book. It is so much more interesting and most importantly more effective then any preachy "Just Say No" drug leaflet you are given in school. This book shows you the highs and the terrifing lows of drug use. Which in itself I found was more educating then anything my parents or teachers could have told me. I am also facinated as to who exactly "Alice" was and when she died as, besides the publishing date it does not mention in the book exactly which years the entries in the book were written. So if anyone as any information on the book itself and/or the people involved please e-mail me.
