Summary: I like it very much because it has adventure and life skills
Review: I like it because you see adventure and life skills and I also enjoyed the part when the girl gets stranded on the island and needs the weapons. I also liked when she found out what had happend to her father and her brothers and sisters, cousin and aunts and uncles, and all her family including the whole village.
That girls name is Karana. She was the one who was stranded and all her family left without her. If you have any questions why I picked the five stars, e-mail me at pv_cdc@ yahoo and I will give you answers so you can know why I liked that book.

Summary: Island of the Blue Island
Review: Island of the Blue Dolphins is a book about a girl who learns to survive by what she has seen and by what she has been taught. She also gets through many years surving by herself even though good things or bad. But in the end she learns a good lessen of responsibility. I really didn't like the book but who ever enjoys survival books they will really enjoy this book.

Summary: Review for The Island of the Blue Dolphins!
Review: I recommend this book to people who really enjoy survival stories. "Everyday whether I was on the headland or gathering shellfish on the rocks or improving my canoe, I was always doing something while watching the Aleuts," Karana said. When events occurred, she was very smart and intelligent about handling her problems. "Almost everyone in tribe has died and I miss my father, but we need to move on and find a new leader." Karana explains how she dealt with her problems to the readers and almost every problem deals with events that happen everyday. So if you really do enjoy survival stories, you will love this one! Karana is a great character and very interesting to read about!

Review: ...I read this book years ago and still remember it (I'm 29). For a young girl around 12 years old, I think this is an excellent story to read. In fact, I'm purchasing the book to re-read. Karana is a great character. O'Dell draws you into the book...I remember not wanting to put the book down because I had to know what was happening to Karana.

Summary: Still a true classic
Review: This classic was voted one of the top 10 American children's books of the last 200 years by the Children's Literature Association. Although modern readers may find it a little dated in some ways and the pacing a little slow, it's still an absorbing and beautiful story about how a resourceful Indian girl survives alone on an island off the California coast for 18 years. The story is a lot like Robinson Crusoe only told from the girl's point of view, but that's okay. (Coincidently Crusoe was rescued after 17 years on his island, if I remember correctly). The book is still worth reading today by young readers and O'Dell does a great job of telling this resourceful young woman's story. The story was inspired by true events, when the girl's people were evacuated from the island of Ghalas-At and she jumped ship to stay behind with her abandoned brother (who tragically dies shortly thereafter, leaving, Karana, the girl, all alone). Overall, still a great classic and worth your child's time and effort.

Summary: An Adolescent's Fantasy
Review: Some kids may like the adventure of "Treasure Island", "Robinson Crusoe" or "Swiss Family Robinson" but my favorite of this genre is "Island of the Blue Dolphins". I read it over 35 years ago when it was the latest Newbery Award winner. I was totally captivated by the adventure, the tragedy, the survival, and the companionship of a dog. Although the main character is a teenage girl, the role fits either gender (which is an important consideration for a teenage reader). This young lady goes from a life in paradise to a life in a lonely castle. Her family and her people are all killed off and she, ultimately, is left with only her dog to pass the years away. Yet, as dreary as it sounds, the story is one of joy and achievement. Indeed, it is somewhat of an anticlimax when the girl is finally rescued and brought to civilization. I was fascinated when I read it as a child and I renewed my fascination many years later when I read it to my children. Don't you OR your children miss out on this one!

Review: If you like shocking,interesting,and heart breaking books you should probably want to read "Island of the Blue Dolphins".It is by Scott O'Dell.Its about a girl who is left and stranded in an island.SHE NEEDS TO SURVIVE! Karana has difficult times like when she has to find a way to hunt.She thinks,and finally makes a spear.She learns how to catch fish.Its pretty sad when you think of orphans now a days. I really recommend kids to read it.I read it in the 4th grade.I loved it so much I read it again,and now im writing about it.YOU SHOULD READ IT! [...]

Summary: Read at least once
Review: I remember reading Island of the Blue Dolphins in the 3rd grade. It was then and continues to be a novel that I read on a rainy day. I'm rather disturbed by the review done by Mr. Edwin Westley III. Pay no heed to his words. This is a wonderful book. Parents might want to consider the maturity and reading level of their children before letting them read it. However, I think that most parents will find that their children will come to love this book as much as I have.

Review: I am a fourth grade teacher, and I think that the book is a wonderful way for students to imagine the way life was for native Californians. Reading the book helps students have a better sense of that time.

Summary: This so called book does not deserve to be called a "book"
Review: There is no reason a person should write a thing and call it a book if it is less than dirt. It may be a bit harsh but it is the truth. "Island of the Blue Dolphins" is not a very suitable name for a book like this, "Island of the Freaks who live with wolves and people die" is a much better name. I have seen the movie based on the Island of the Blue Dolphins and it tries to lively up the book but even that is a sad attempt. Scott O'Dell is a good author but this book is just not very good! I have no idea how this book ever got published and I DO NOT recommend this book!
