Rating: Summary: Pretty good but a little old fashioned and slow Review: I am an Elementary education major and had to view the video and compare it to the book for a lesson plan. I thought it accurately depicted a lot of things but was incorrect in a lot of other ways. It did bring the characters to life but left out some key scenes. Rontu in the movie was not one of the wild dogs from the island but was left by the Aleuts whereas in the book he was described as one of the wild dogs. Other than that I found it a bit slow and old fashioned. Overall I thought it was good and would use it with a class to view critically and to compare to the book.
Rating: Summary: Island Of the Blue Dolphins Review: This book was about a young girl that lived on a island in a village with her family. The island was in the middle of the ocean where there were many animals and lots of water all around the small island. Then one day a ship came to hut some otter to trade for some goods. The people of the island agreed but when the Alutes were done hunting they didn't give the small Indian village ther fair share. Thats when there was a battel between the two. The Indian lost many people and decided to move to a different place. So later that month a ship came tp pick them up but s tey left they forgot a ypung girl named Karana. She was left on the island for many years. Read this book and find out her adventures. This book shows her strong will and if you have strenght you can do anything. It shows not to depend on anyoneles and to try not to give up. I liked this book because it was very exciting and it kept you in climax all most the whole time. When I started i couldn't stop. Its a very good story and shows that you can do anything if you try.
Rating: Summary: A story reverently told Review: I have always been fascinated by stories of people who live close to nature and away from civilization. As a child, I read "The Swiss Family Robinson" by Johann Wyss (which I enjoyed) and "Robinson Crusoe" by Daniel Defoe (no comment). Then I found this book. Now I can't enthuse enough. "Island of the Blue Dolphins" enchanted me from the beginning. It is the story of Karana, a young girl who must adapt to a life of solitude and loneliness after the departure of her tribe and the death of her brother. Yet there is nothing fatalistic or bitter about her: she has the strength to make the most of any situation and the grace to let adversity make the most of her. Scott O'Dell tells the story in first person, keeping Karana's voice simple and honest. This may be cliched, but the best description I have for his style is "hauntingly beautiful." What makes this novel different from those of Wyss and Defoe is the character's relationship to the setting. Crusoe and the Robinson family could barely look at a plant, an animal or a rock, without thinking of how they could use it to practical advantage. In this, they resemble all the hunters who, at different points in the novel, come to the island to hunt otter and never really noticed any of its natural beauty. In contrast, Karana was intimate with her island. She took what she needed for food, shelter, protection, even companionship--but somehow also gave back to the island and to the ocean. She did not change her surroundings and remain unchanged herself. "Island of the Blue Dolphins" has many themes, but my favorite is the transformation that occurs when one lives at peace with nature and with circumstance.
Rating: Summary: Island of the Blue Dolphins Review Review: I read the book the Island of the Blue Dolphins. This is a great book, I recommend everybody to read it. The book starts out slow, but will build up as it goes. In this book there is a little girl named Won-a-pa-lei. She lived in the village Ghalas-at with her tribe. Her tribe all had secrets names. Hers is Karana. She has a father, younger brother and an older sister. Her mom died when she was very young. One day she saw a big boat with huge red sails. These men were called the Aleuts. These people came to the island to catch sea otter. Won-a-pa-lei's father, the Cheif of the tribe, said they may hunt the otter if they shared half when finished hunted. Once the Aleuts were ready to leave they did not pay their fair share. There was a huge fight and many died. Won-a-pa-lei's died had died too. The new Cheif of the tribe set of to the east to new land, for if the Aleuts returned they would not be able to fight them. Suns and Moons later another big ship returned, but this time had white sails. These men were sent to bring them to the new land. As the tribe gathered on to the boat the wind started to blow hard. Every body was on. Except when Won-a-pa-lei looked upon the island she saw her brother, Ramo, jumping up and down. It was too windy to turn around. They would have to come back another day. Won-a-pa-lei jumped off the boat to catch her little brother. They were both stuck on the Island. Later in the book Ramo is attacked by the wild dogs and killed. She is all alone on the Island. She builds a knew shelter, makes weapons, collects food and catches one of the wild dogs and become friends with him. She also makes many other animal friends on the island. Then once again the Aleuts returned. She hid and slept where her canoe was and stayed there until they left. Aleuts that is what she planed. She went out to get water, but one of the Aleut's wife's sees her. Instead of telling the other Aleuts she becomes a friend with Won-a-pa-lei. They make many gifts for each other until the Aleuts have to leave. Won-a-pa-lei makes even more friends with different animals after the Aleuts leave because she feels lonely. After awhile the White men with the white sails return. They told her the other ship had sunk and never made it back. They also tell her the aren't sure if they will make it back either. Now to find this out and all the many detail I left you will just have to read this book for your self. So go get this book and keep on reading.

It's about an Indian girl who gets separated from her family and is stranded on an island. Now she needs to survive. Difficult challenges face Karana. For an example, she needs to find a way to hunt so she can eat. She makes a spear out of wood and carves a rock in a shape of a triangle and catches fish to eat. This book made me feel sad for kids who are orphans and who live on their own. This book was so terrific the I read it in only two days! I would recommend this book to people of ages 8-150. He has written so many kinds of books for teenagers and is one of the most popular authors for young people. In 1976 the Children's Literature Association named this riveting story one of the ten best American children's boos of the past two handred years. The story is about a twelve-year old American Indian girl,Karana. O'Dell wrote the real-life story of that litle Indian girl. One day a ship came to take the Indians off of the island, which looks like the blue dolphin. In all the excitement, they didn't make sure that everyone was on the ship. So they didn't notice that Karana's little brother wasn't on the ship. She jumped ship to stay with her little brother, who had been abandoned on the island, but he dided shourtly thereafter, adn she had to live alone on the island for 18 years. After that she had to wait a long time for them come back and get her. So she made weapons, built shelter, found good and fought wild dogs by herself, but also she made wonderful friend to talk with. She became a very strong person during those 18 years. This story written primarily for children. So if you like books about survival adn adventure read this book. It's a good book that touches your heart. I loved it!

When Karana got left behind she was told that another ship would come back for her. But Karana wasn't the only one who got left behind her younger brother was left behind too. Rating: Summary: Karana's Isolation Review: Imagine being all alone with no one to talk to and no knowledge of how to survive. In Scott O'Dell's book, Island of the Blue Dolphins, Karana is a young girl who loses her father to the Aleuts, white men, in a plot of deceit to cheat their people, and loses her brother Ramo to mad dogs. She is stranded on her island for 18 years until her people finally return for her. While on the island, she must overcome loneliness and live a survival adventure while maturing at the same time. This island called Coral Cove in the Virgin Island inhabits many creatures that Karana befriends and their friendship help her to survive. This book is about Karana's adaptation to her surroundings and how she fends for herself. She makes new friends and grows up in the process. Many challenges come her way and she overpowers each one with an unsurmountable bravery. This book is exciting and a great lesson in life. I would recommend this book to students and educators for those who need the message and encouragement to never give up.
