Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: By far the best introduction to Russian available. Review: I bought this package before leaving for Moscow to study beginner's Russian. While the class at Moscow State University, with its starchy Soviet-style rote memorization system still in place, bored me to despair, evenings spent with Express Track to Russian quickly sent me to the top of the class and allowed me to quickly graduate to a more interesting intermediate-level course. Not only is this course package comprehensive, it is bubbling with cultural flavour. From the dialogue of the wife castigating her husband for reading the newspaper while eating breakfast ("It's bad for your health!"), to the hilariously aggressive intonation of "Allo!" employed by Russian men over the telephone (I repeated the telephone dialogue to a Russian student shortly after, making sure to copy the intonation, and she burst into laughter, asking me how I managed to imitate Russian intonation so quickly), the entire package is brimming with beautiful cultural nuance which will stay with the serious student of Russian for years to come. This is now my fifth year of studying Russian, and I can honestly say that this was the best, most memorable self-study course that I have ever come across. The only pity is that there is not a more advanced follow-up course (and that the other Express Track programmes (e.g. French) are not nearly as good).

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Well worth the price. Review: If you're serious about learning russian, and can't afford classes, this program's for you. It's a well organized program that really teaches the language, not just how to say "Hello", "Goodbye", and "Thank you". It has a colorful textbook with some games, a workbook, 2 supplemental books, and 4 tapes. It will take you all the way from the first letter of the alphabet to translating entire paragraphs. It is a very well made program.
Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: You need to know some basics first Review: These tapes and books will help you if you already have some knowledge of the language, as it goes right into conversation. But I was lost, forever lost in a world of unfamiliar letters, unusual sentence structure and words that incorporate the prepositions.

Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: Merely okay. Review: This isn't bad, but the Living Language Ultimate Russian Basic/Intermediate course is quite a bit better for about the same price.
The living language series is also coming out with CD editions, which makes it much easier to convert them to MP3 and study your language while walking, etc. Cassettes are a pain, difficult to access tracks and they wear out, too. Another plus with the living language ultimate Russian course is that there's an advanced course, should you decide to continue your study.
This just isn't worth it.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: excellent for those willing to work Review: This seems an excellent course for those who wish to really learn Russian. Since I am someone who learns languages best by speaking, reading, and writing, I liked the fact that this course starts you out writing (just like kindergarden, you form the letters), something that many courses ignore. The tapes are of fine quality;the texbooks are well thought out and very nicely illustrated. There's also a fair amount of information on russian culture. I used this a a complete beginner, and though I'm not particularly good with languages, I found it easy to use and effective. Different learners function differently, and I like the idea that there is no English on the tapes. Trying to learn a langiuage by constantly shifting back and forth between English and the target language does not work well for me;in contrast this approach does work for me.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Excellent Review: Very easy to understand and follow. The speakers on the tapes speak relatively clearly and the textbooks are fun without being too childish. An excellent program for those who have absoutely no knowledge of Russian, but want or need to learn.
