Summary: In My Hands (Memories of a Holocaust Rescuer): Irene Gut Opd
Review: Irene Gut, a 17 year old student nurse and Catholic Pole, had taken many chances during World War Two to help Jews from certain death. Irene joined the Red Cross and when it got dangerous fled to the forest. Throughout the story Irene had to deal with being raped, serving for a German major, and much more. Irene protected 10 Jews in the basement of the major's villa and traveled back and forth to Janowka, a forest where refugees were plentiful. Irene risks her life numerous times through the story to help the Jews she was hiding and protecting. This is a courageous tale of bravery and morality, and I suggest, if you read any book, you read this one.

Summary: A tale that will take your heart away
Review: Who would have thought that such a young girl could show such courage in this kind of pressure and dilema. This is the story of a young girl torn between saving herself or saving others and the sacrifices she takes. It is moving and interesting. If I could read more about this story I surely would.

Summary: i think this would be a great book
Review: well, i'm very grateful that i have met irene gut opdyke. i met her last week. she was a friend of my classmate's family. she told us her story orally. it really touched me and everyone else who was with me. it was really sweet that she gave her spare time to share her story to us even though she had gone to a surgery a day before we met her. i didn't realize how tragic her life was until i met her. she truly deserves to be a hero.

Summary: An amazing book!
Review: This book tells the amazing story of a woman making many sacrifices to save Jews during the Holocaust. One really wonderful aspect of it is that after horrendous things happen to her, she does not stop helping Jews flee and hide from a camp in Ternopol. I really enjoyed this book, and it's based on a true story, which makes it even better. I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

Summary: In My Hands- My Favorite Book
Review: In My Hands is probably one of the best books you can find about true heroism during the darkest part of history. Irene Gut Opdyke's struggle to save the lives of over a dozen Jewish friends by giving of herself (being raped, used as a mistress, separation from her family) is dispicted in this fantastic book. As a Jewish young woman, I cannot stop but feel gratitude for this woman, who save part of my people. Here is a book, where good finally triumphs over evil, and makes you proud to have such a person in our species. Thank you to Mrs. Opdyke for all that you have done.

Summary: An extremely important work: Read It.
Review: I'm not sure why this book has been aimed primarily at a young audience because it is such a compelling and vitally important book on many levels concerning the subject of WWII and the Holocaust. Any study of WWII in Europe that does not include this book is an incomplete one. I heartily encourage all to pick it up. This book, along with the work of Elie Wiesel, has certainly made a permanent impression on the way I see history from this time period.

Summary: The Best Holocaust Book
Review: I love to read all sorts of memoirs written by people who survived the holocaust. Those people were all Jewish and were victims of the holocaust. In this book, Irene has survived the holocaust too, but in a different way. She survived the risk of helping Jewish people.

This book gave me a new perspective on the holocaust. In every other holocaust memoir, we often wonder where are the Christian people? Why aren't they helping? Well, this book showed that many people DID try to help. They were taking a huge risk by helping thee Jewish, but did it anyway. This book showed that even such horrors were seen during WW2, there were still many people who cared.

Summary: A Heroic Tale
Review: After hearing Irene Gut Opdyke interviewed on National Public Radio in 1999, I resolved to read her book. I was surprised to find it in the "juvenile" section of the library, because it deserves to take a space on the shelf next to any wartime memoir. Her story left me with my mouth hanging open, as first one and then another close call resulted in her finding ever more courage and resourcefulness. Her story also illustrates the absurdities and complexities of war, making this a book I could scarcely put down until the last page.

Summary: Into My Hands went into my heart!
Review: I am an avid reader of all books about the Holocaust. I try to get my hands on every single good book out there about this topic. When this book came into my library, I was stoked! Irene is an incredible lady who survived rape, sexual advances from her female boss, becoming a mistress, and through all that and more managed to be a fabulous provider for the more than 12 Jews in her hands. To think of the life she lived, what she gave up, how precious life must have been, knowing that she could be caught at any moment. And Irene Gut Opdyke did all of this before she was 23. I rest my case. Read this and her other book "Into the Fire". You'll LOVE them and her by the first chapters!
