Rating: Summary: A must have book for students seeking federal careers. Review: Kathryn, and daughter Emily, Troutman's "The Student's Federal Career Guide" is a well-written, easy to use guide to finding and winning a government job or internship. They cover all the bases, from translating your college major to a federal job title, to writing those mysterious KSA essays. The CD rom provides real life case studies and sample resumes. This is one of the most valuable reference sources on the market today for launching a federal career.
Rating: Summary: A former insiders' view Review: This book contains a lot of useful information for high school and college students (at all degree levels) who are considering working for their country or who are interested in combining their educational experience with work experiences in federal agencies. Kathryn and Emily have provided a lot of information about how the federal hiring process works. Perhaps more importantly they also have provided in one easy-to-find place information about internships and work-study opportunities available through many federal agencies. Their book is a great resource for exploring what the largest employer in the US has to offer. I recently retired after working for 37 years in Federal Human Resources, and have not seen a better book on this subject.
Rating: Summary: Have any interest in the Federal Government? Start Here Review: This is an outstanding resource for anyone interested in working with the Federal Government. This books does more than just tell you what is out there; it also tells you where to look, how to look, how to take advantage of all the resources available to you, how to network with federal employees and others, why you should consider the federal government, how much you should look to be paid, etc., etc.
I work directly with graduate students of international affairs and unfailingly I suggest they read through this book and or look at the web site. It is an excellent way for me, as a career adviser, to show my students what is out there for them beyond the Department of State, and even outside of Washington, DC, and the United States.
Also, the resume guide and advice is invaluable to those interested in applying. Not many people know that federal resumes can, and should, be an expanded version of a non-government resume.
All career advisers should read through this book, and try to get Kathryn and her daughter, Emily, to speak to their students, especially those outside of DC. We have them come to campus twice a year, and our students and alumni have had nothing but rave reviews for them.
At the very least, however, get the book...
