Summary: I sent copies of this book to my clients
Review: As a financial planner one of the most difficult concepts to get across to clients is that "buy and hold" strategies are more risky than timing strategies. Les Masonson in the introduction and three chapters presents a convincing argument that will show you that buying and putting away mutual funds is good only for the portfolio managers running the funds. Why stand in the way of a freight train as the market crashes for three years in a row? While the first part of the book alone is worth the price, the rest of it presents simple and carefully worked techniques that you can use to protect yourself from crashes and take advantage of the big rallies that separate them. It takes just minutes from time to time during the year to employ these techniques. I urge you to get the book and read it.

Summary: Its about time
Review: I am a trader and investor, and after seeing all the shenanigans of the last several years on Wall Street, its tough to know who to trust or believe regarding investment advice. I say trust yourself! Leslie Masonson has compiled a fascinating and comprehensive set of facts and figures that can show the most inexperienced investor to the seasoned trader, the pitfalls and the truth about "Buy and Hold" investing. It provides strategies that have and continue to make investors real money. I was blown away with how this book dispels and uncovers the misleading information "Wall Street" has been feeding to the investing public. This book showed me that there are better ways to invest, better strategies that can keep you in the market at the right times and prevent you from sitting through all of its stomach churning gyrations. Mr. Masonson provides strategies that produce real results, without making investing a full time job.

Summary: Enlightening
Review: I have been a trader for years, actively trading well over a 100,000 shares a day, while managing a substantial portfolio. I have read most of the "I have a winning stock market strategy for you" books over the past several years. Aside from a handful they all were relatively disappointing. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by this, "Market Timing", book. Many of the, "Market Strategy" books I have read require the investor to spend an unrealistic amount of time managing their investments and require them to have an in depth understanding of the stock market. I found much of the information to be eye opening and enlightening, even for a professional, and the strategies quite useful. If the author's goal was to provide investors with a No Nonsense perspective of the market and strategies to increase their total return while significantly decreasing their risk over the long term, then mission accomplished. I strongly recommend this book to amateur and professional investors.

Summary: No better time to read this!
Review: Les does a great job in all the work he does and this book does not disappoint. His views on timing are straight forward, sensible and well founded.
I especially liked the areas on mechanical trading systems and capital preservation methods. I believe every market participant must learn to survive before they thrive and this book addresses this reality very well. The buy and hold approach is simply riddled with risk that most investors never understand this fact until too late. Fund managers love to hide behind time-making claims such as-"it isn't market timing but time in the market that counts". This is yet another market myth that fund managers and analysts want you to believe, but Les make the real point by pointing out that time in the market is often the riskiest approach of all.
For these reasons alone (and many others) the book is well worth your money and more importantly your TIME! I would suggest this book to anyone.

Summary: No Nonsense Book On Market Timing Hits a Home Run
Review: No Nonsense Book On Market Timing Hits a Home Run

This gem of a book could not have appeared at a more propitious time. Written by an long-time investor for investors, in a time when Sheriff Spitzer is riding herd opening our eyes on illegal behavior which in the near past was hoodwinked and brushed under the rug; this book provides an educational supplement and individualized trading approach to complement the AG's work.

Masonson is relentless in researching and documenting his findings on the market timing strategies that he covers. The confident and self assured author of Daytrading On The Edge is also a ranked and extremely popular AMAZON investment book reviewer totaling thirty reviews to date. His reviews provide guidance in evaluating educational materials when developing your trading system or making investment decisions.

With the tail end of the secular bear market, one of the painful lessons learned is that investors would have to make their own decisions to protect their money, since no one will do it for you.
And with this in mind, Masonson sets out his fourfold objective for writing this book:

1. Delineating why market timing is a superior investment strategy compared to
buy and hold.
2. Providing profitable market timing strategies that are simple to understand and easy to implement.
3. Providing guidance to investors to avoid future bear markets and protect their principal.
4. Helping investors maximize their returns in both good and bad times

The author convincingly argues that future bear markets will arrive like clockwork, and that investors better be prepared to deal with them. To this end, his book focuses exclusively on using timing with index funds, sector funds, leveraged funds and exchange-traded funds.

His thesis is laid out in a simple, concise and logical manner in thirteen very layered and structured chapters. Numerous easy-to-follow graphs and tables support the arguments. The investor does not have to deal with the tortuous double-dealing 'street style'.

Masonson's sincerity and integrity in wanting to help investors' succeed is even evident in the book's epilogue. In addition the author provides a summary of key points, bibliography of books, articles, academic papers for further reading and study, and a listing of important websites.

Coupled with the author's prologue of 'How To Use This Book', the reader will be thoroughly prepared for navigating the book and the challenges of the market. Masonson successfully takes on the overarching task of preparing us to be successful investors, and he has succeeded. After this delightful, easy to follow book on such a complex task, there should be no more excuses. Investors know what they have to do to be successful, and NOW is the time to start. I concur 100% with the other 10 reviews of this book: its message blows you away and its strategies are simple and they work. This book will become a classic in the "market timing" genre.

Summary: INSIGHTFUL!
Review: The preponderance of research for the past 100 years or so has demonstrated convincingly that stock markets are pretty efficient and that stock prices move randomly, or almost randomly. That is a strong argument against trying to time the market. Author Leslie N. Masonson disagrees, contending that if you use a few simple techniques to time the market, you can avoid losses and wind up with a more profitable portfolio than if you simply bought a representative selection of stocks and held them, as most financial advisors now recommend. He could have presented more evidence to support his opinion, but he is honest enough to contrast his point of view with the many arguments against attempting to time the market. He acknowledges that timing requires certain staunch character traits that are far from universally present in the investing populace. That is to his credit. Also to his credit, according to us, is the fact that he usefully defines and discusses a number of trading techniques and information sources that even non-investors should know about and that investors should understand.

Summary: A Must Read for all Stock Market Investors
Review: This book provides a well written, easy to understand approach to investing in todays markets while limiting your risk. The information and documentation provided in this book is enlightening to someone like myself who employed the old "buy and hold" strategy for many years. This book will help level the playing field by providing the individual investor with the knowledge base and technical skills to make more informed decisions about our investments. Having personlly taken a beating from the 2000-2002 bear market, I am now more than ready to utilize the timing strategies laid out in this book to reduce risk, preserve capital, and sleep better at night. With the market heating up again, I recommend this book as a must read for all investors to help ensure we don't get "burned" again, when the next market downturn inevitably occurs.

Summary: Decent book but Amazon's 5 star mania is not credible
Review: This is a decent book but Amazon's rating have zero credibility anymore. Rolf Dobelli posting multiple 5 star message. I bought a $395 software program mentioned in Masonson's book and I am not impressed.
