Review: This is an extraordinary book. I found it gripping and so well written I could hardly put it down. It combines a profound depth with a practicality around money issues that changed the way I look at every money issue in my own life as well as in the world.

Summary: If money causes you suffering, there is no better book!
Review: This is the first book I've read that encompasses almost any money issue. As a financial planner myself, I'm often hard-pressed to recommend books to clients. One book is much too technical. Another is so wishy-washy that you never quite feel how it connects to your everyday money life. The recent wave of money gurus are getting rich off of simplicity, but their material is so rooted in the practicalities of money, that they never address the root causes of most people's suffering, which lie way beyond the rules of investing & taxes.George Kinder's new book is the best balance of great practical information, exercises to take you back into the roots of your money anxieties, and entertaining stories to learn from. If you're considering a book on money, this should be the one!

Summary: The Hero's Journey as applied to our relationship with money
Review: To put it simply, George Kinder has created a template for identifying what makes us most uncomfortable around money and then transforming ourselves to be more at ease in those situations. If you are a financial advisor, you'll want to read this book first to help yourself uncover what is truly important in your life and what obstacles you may unconsciously place in your way that inhibit your attaining your true goals and aspirations. Then, as an advisor, you'll want to model what you've learned and have your clients read this book so that you will share the roadmap with them that can help transform their lives, with you at their side (like Virgil guiding Dante through the Inferno). As a lay person, outside of the financial profession, you will be moved by George Kinder's very literate style that pulls wisdom from disparate sources such as the major religions, classic works of literature, as well as popular culture. Above all, you will see how the Hero's Journey, as chronicled by Joseph Campbell, is the framework of our own journey through our dark places (our painful dilemmas around money) to our eventual emergence into the light (and a sense of freedom with financial issues). Read this book carefully and do the exercises included inside, and watch your emotions surface. That's when you'll recognize how powerful a work The Seven Stages of Money Maturity is.
