Rating: Summary: complete and useful Review: I like how this book ties in all the aspects of trading from the psychology to methods then money management. It also warns you of the negative things to avoid which are just as important. The book has become a classic with ideas and methods that never go out of style. One of the great things in this book is how the author talks about what the professionals do and what the amatures do and how it pays to bet with the professionals. Its a complete book thats been one of the most recommended by market pros. I bought this book because of that reason and am happy i did. Toni Turners books on stock trading are excellent also and good additions to this book.
Rating: Summary: Educational Review: Elder has done a wonderful job in this book of presenting the factors that create the cross currents in the market, the battle of the bulls and bears and he shows you the tools to tell who is winning. The psychology section is priceless, you will find no fluff just straight forward explanations. There is plenty in this book to absorb and you will want to read it a few times and keep it close by as a reference for future use.
Rating: Summary: Powerful Book Review: I found this book to be highly comprehensive, there are no wasted words. The section on technical analysis is great with trading rules behind every indicator and little facts that other books don`t mention. I like the way the author describes the market as a battle of bulls and bears, amatures and professionals and then describes how each one affects the behaviour of prices. Every chapter is packed with valuable info about psychology, market technicals and money management in a very complete fashion. This is a must in any traders library.
Rating: Summary: The trader's book to own Review: If there were just one technical analysis book to own, that would be it. The author starts by honestly explaining that markets are designed to take your money and trading is a minus-sum game. The three M (Money, Mind, Method) of trading explained in chrystal clear English. Only a village idiot could hope to TFAL after reading just one book, but this is the place start for a beginner. I'm sure experienced traders would also benefit from it. Elder's other book "Come into my trading room" is seconday to this but also very good.
Rating: Summary: A TRUE CLASSIC Review: This book has it all, it will teach you the psychology of market moves and the best technical indicators to use to time them. Then it gives excellent guidelines on money management, all in one book. Everything in this book is vital solid reading material to improve anyones stock trading performance. Every active trader should own a copy.
Rating: Summary: PUZZLING Review: The author states "that resistance is like a diver who reaches the ocean floor."..".also the trader is the weakest link in the system , yet sole reponsibility for its decisions rest in the trader.' The book is full with such contradictions and psychological manipulations that only a very smart professional will be able to bypass all the hype and false info. Since Eastern Europenas are usually superiorly educated than its Western counterparts I was dissapointed with reading his contracdicting thoughts on the market.
Rating: Summary: Same old same ole Review: Elder runs trading camps and has a real cult of personality so allot reviews are based on him and not necessarily this book. The book is really a re-hashing of simple trend trading and really shows it's age. If you must persist with Elder I'd get Come Into My Trading Room which has some interesting ideas, the stop loss worksheet etc. but really Elder is someone you probably won't get much out of unless you are a long term trader (> 13 weeks) or do options as too much of his stuff just doesn't make it for day trading or swing trading...for daytrading get the Bernstein books, he's got some good ideas but he's rather sloppy in execution still his systems are variations on some solid stuff. For swing trading, the old standby, with allot caveat, is Edwards & Magee. Elder really doesn't have enough in him to warrant more than glimpsing at hjs stuff.
Rating: Summary: We Recommend this to all our Subscribers as Trading 101 Review: The dichotomy of trading is that it appears deceptively easy when in fact it is painstakingly difficult to get off to a successful start. Many trading books take advantage of this misperception and neglect to mention the difficulties and oversimplify or even misrepresent the necessary basics, much like the shop keepers, the saloon owners, and other merchants did to prospective gold seekers during the California gold rush. Dr. Elder is one of the few honest merchants in this field who explores the dark side of trading up front. In fact the first impression this book will make on a new trader is how difficult it is going to be to consistently make money in the market through short term trading. But alas, most good things in life come with a bit of difficulty and those who are willing to pay the price by studying, even mastering the basics, will in the end be rewarded with a career that offers many perks. This book should be considered the text for Trading 101 as it explains in a simple way the basics necessary to succeed. As another reviewer has mentioned it is unnecessary to strain yourself by learning charting techniques reading 400+ pages of Murphy's "Technical Analysis of the Futures Markets." If you are willing to master the material in Elder's book, it is arguable that, along with a good candlestick-charting book, you will have sufficiently mastered the charting techniques necessary to find a good degree of success in finding a good trade to enter. It is doubtful that if you are new to charting that you will ever look at a stock chart the same after reading this book. The difference in how you view a chart when you are finished with this book is akin to the comparison of how a non Russian speaking person views the Cyrillic alphabet and how Vladimir Putin sees the words on a Tolstoy novel. As founder of a web site dedicated to the success and education of our subscribers, we continually recommend this book to those who are serious about making a career as a trader.
Rating: Summary: A well deserved title Review: This book is amazing. Dr. Alexander Elder uses metaphors to explain trading. This took some complicated aspects about trading and made them simple. If you are relatively new to trading, prepare for an information overload!! I had to take a nap after every 40 pages I read in this book, because the information was so important and new to me. There is so much to learn in this book, I recommend that you read it more than once to make sure you get it all in.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful book Review: I have been involved in trading for the last three years. I consider this the best book I ever read on this subject and one of the most interesting books in general. It is hard to stop reading it once you start. I really recommend it to anybody interested in trading. You will not regret buying it.
