Rating: Summary: THe dogs BolloX Review: Well. I saw truimph of the nerds. Bought the book and now I live in a cave with the little gnomes who tend to my every whim
Rating: Summary: Well-written, acerbic humor, and very informative Review: I really enjoyed reading this book because it not only provided a good history of the "pc" industry, but also made me laugh. He does a great job explaining the significance of various technologies for those who may have trouble understanding the nuances of this industry. He puts the personalities that drove these technologies into perspective. It's completely interesting, informative, and witty. I am eagerly awaiting the next book!
Rating: Summary: Outstanding! A Must Read If You Care About the Computer Biz Review: This book has two important things going for it. First, it's accurate. (I know. I remember most of it happening just the way Cringely describes it.) The other thing, though, is that it's INCREDIBLY well written. Great style, keen wit, sharp insight. You couldn't ask for much more from a book like this.
Rating: Summary: Hilarious! Review: I laughed so much reading this book that I nearly urinated myself in public. Enough said!
Rating: Summary: You won't be able to put this book down! Review: I can't add much more to what has already been said about this book. I wholeheartedly agree with the other reviews. But what I liked the most about the book is how Cringely manages to write several books into one. Sure, this is a history of the PC and the computer industry. But it's also much more. It's a study in industrial organizations and economics. It's an account of the impact of managerial style on the success of organizations. It's a narrative on idea development and commercialization. This book is complex, entertaining and instructive. Three adjectives you don't often see together.
Rating: Summary: Great book. Recommended for even the semi-geeky. Review: Robert X. Cringly has written a book that always manages to keep the reader's attention with a blend of interesting facts and quirky humor. I loved this book and read it twice within a month of getting it. I recommend this for anybody who is even slightly interested in computers. Couldn't put it down.
Rating: Summary: humorous look at the history of the PC industry Review: For you Bill Gates worshippers or Bill Gates haters, here's the book for you. An amazingly fast read that chronicles the ironic history of the PC industry. This book is both informative and hilarious. The author clearly points out the pivotal issues and times that affected the industry throughout the years. The only thing that bothers me is the cult of personality that is bestowed on Gates throughout the book.
Rating: Summary: The history of Nerds...with a great sense of humor. Review: Robert X. Cringely's book is a humorous look at the history of the nerds of Silicon Valley California. He covers everything from an account of a drunken Bill Gates to Steve Jobs ego-maniac rampage at Apple...all with a humorous and comical perspective. What makes Cringley's account of these "nerds" different from others is one main important element: he was there. Being a "nerd" himself, Cringely was an Apple employee and first hand "victim" to Steve Jobs' Apple. Offering personal anecdotes helps keep the reader entertained and interested. There are stories on just about all the big names: Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, Larry Ellison, John Warnock. Stories include the birth of the Macintosh, DOS, Ethernet, Postscript. . . All sounds very boring? SURPRISE! It's actaully entertaining thanks to Cringley's humorous touch!
Rating: Summary: A super book opens one's eyes to the age of technology Review: A funny and enlightening read into the accidents that caused the Computer age. The author has put in simple language the way the age of computers came about - the how, why and where. Well worth the time taken to read the book.
Rating: Summary: The best quick & dirty history of the industry around! Review: You'll love the good guys and hate the bad guys even more. If you ever wondered what happened to products(& the companies associated with them) like GEOS & Wordstar and hundreds of others, this is the book. You'll be astounded to learn what fools some were and just how unbelieveably lucky others were. This is a must read for anyone involved in the industry. And it is funny, too!
