Rating: Summary: Good reference book. Not a good book for learning. Review: I have 3 ASP.net books. Sams teach yourself ASP.net in 21 days is a much better book for learning. It starts out at a higher level and then goes to detail. The Unleashed book doesn't give you the big picture. The SAMS book also has comparisons with Java, which I like.
Rating: Summary: Excellent for new or experienced developers Review: I bought this book knowing quite a bit about the dynamic web and web development, and I got a lot out of this book. The book is easy to read, and kept me interested throughout. Great examples that give you a good overview of each topic. I would probably recommend you atleast know something about the web and programming before you pick this book up. But its not too advanced.
Rating: Summary: A really good book to learn ASP.NET Review: To anyone wishing to learn the in's and out's of ASP.NET, I highly recommend this book. It is geared for the beginner to advanced programmer. As a mainframe programmer making the switch to web based applications, I found Walther's writing style and explanations extremely clear. He is clearly a TEACHER, who can bring his point across, clearly and concisely. Walther steps one through the various concepts with small examples that are meaningful and complete. After having completed a few of his examples one finds themselves adding an 'extra sub routine or two' to make the aspx page do something a bit extra. Personally this separates parroting from insight. In all fairness, one must be prepared to work through the examples that are presented, in order to obtain the most from the text. This is NOT an armchair read. Stephen Walther is to be commended for his excellent effort in compiling and preparing this book. Great value for money. You won't go wrong by purchasing the book.
Rating: Summary: Perfect for VB developers who are new to ASP/ASP.NET Review: I'm an experienced VB developer making the transition to ASP.NET, so I bought this book to show me the way. I could not have made a better choice... The author assumes you're an ... and backs up every concept with easy to follow examples. His writing style also makes it easier - there's very little mumbojumbo or effort on his part to impress you. It's simply written in a way that you can understand. However, it's not with its warts - there is no CD included with the book and you'll find a few book editing and code errors. I recommend it - it's a GREAT introductory book to ASP.NET programming.
Rating: Summary: Good Solid Explanation Review: I have only had this book for 2 weeks but have already gained a lot of knowledge from it. I like the layout with each chapter having bulleted lists of what is going to be discussed. Good solid resource.
Rating: Summary: Greatest Book Review: I bought many books related ASP.NET. This book is the best book. If you follow the example sources, you will understand the underling concepts clearly. Great Book.
Rating: Summary: Good ASP.NET coverage but not for C# developers Review: This books covers pretty much all aspects of ASP.NET in good detail. The examples are well documented and many apply to common everyday problems. I've only two problems with the book: 1. All the source is in VB.NET. I thought the book would offer the examples in both VB and C# or at least offer an online copy of the source in C#. But I admit this is my fault since I didn't check more carefully before I bought the book. 2. The author constantly keeps refering to the samples "on the CD accompanying the book." I find this very annoying since there's NO cd accompanying the book! I'm not sure how this could've escaped the editors and the publisher. Either they knew there would be no CD and didn't care to revise the material or they didn't ship the CD. Having the source on CD is not a big deal since you can get it online, but it's just a matter of respecting the readers.
Rating: Summary: Great book! Review: I really enjoyed this book. It is on the bulky side, but it's a good read. It is definitely exhaustive, too. I recommend it.
Rating: Summary: A good book - Samples are in VB Review: I've been scouring this book all weekend. If you are looking for a good book on ASP.NET I'd consider this one but I need to point out one important fact. ** All the code samples are written in VISUAL BASIC. ** I have nothing against VB, but feel this is important to point out for the folks who might be expecting C# as I was. One other annoying thing is the omission of the CD which the author contantly refers to. However, I've heard that the code can be dowloaded from the author's site. Besides the two things above - great book. It's strong enough in all other areas to recommend to anyone trying to wrap their head around ASP.NET.
Rating: Summary: Will become the ASP.NET bestseller! Review: This is without doubt the best ASP.NET book I have read so far. One huge advantage of this book is that Stephen wrote it all - a lot of books have chapters written by different authors. This inevitably leads to each author re-iterating what earlier authors have already discussed. Stephen's writing style is also very easy to read. You will be able to sit down and read this almost like a novel - quite unusual for a technical book. From a technical standpoint it is hard to fault this book. I learnt many new things even after reading other ASP.NET books - I suspect the other books discussed them, but somehow the information didn't sink in! A CD would have been nice, but the samples were easily downloaded from SamsPublishing.com, installed and ran perfectly.
