Summary: Good Book - Not For Beginners
Review: Browsing through this book first-hand from the library immediately convinced me to buy this book. The chapters are broken up into specialized sections and each section is broken down furthur. So if I need to brush up on on the datagrid, I know where to go. Secondly, most of the examples were easy enough to follow. The only beef I have is that as you progress the examples become very advanced (Quickly) and require you to do a little side research (Which is not a bad thing I suppose.) An example would be in the calendar webform section. There is an example of creating a calendar scheduler that uses streams and binary writers. These objects dont get covered until the end of the book. I like to read in a linear fashion, I dont like having to read ahead to figure out how something works. Finally, the request and response intrinsic objects could use more explanation. I know that webforms deprecate many of its functionality, but I know for a fact that the response, server, and request objects bring new features to the table. Over-all the book is a good reference and I understand that ASP.NET is much more vast and requires more explanation than 1300 pages can offer. This book is not for beginners, I must say that my prior experience with classic ASP has made this book an easy adjustment for me.

Finally, this book could use pictures to back up its examples and because im VB.NET doesn't mean everyone is. It wouldn't hurt to throw C# examples in. Considering C# may become the more popular of the two languages.

Summary: ASP.NET Anleashed????
Review: If you know absolute zilch about .NET technology, this book will make you know not much more. If you love typing, HTML/JAVA and you are an "expert" in WEB "programming" BS, you will love this book, but will learn zilch about .NET technology.
If you heard that .NET technology is very good for people who would like to develop WEB applications that look like Windows applications and FAST, this book is not for you at all.
Absolute waste of money AND TIME!!! Self promoting BS as usual!

There is no way around - you have to RTFM - Read The F..n Manuals.
And where is the f..n CD we paid for? Downloadable CD? Duh!!!

Good luck with .NETting!

Summary: Best ASP.NET book I've found
Review: I own several ASP.NET books, and this has been by far the most useful. It is very readable and contains great explanations of everything. Time after time when I've had a question, this has been the book that gave me the anwer. All the code samples work, as far I've tried them so far. If you are new to ASP.NET, I highly recommend this book. This is not just a simple re-hash of the Microsoft documentation.

However, you should know that the examples are in VB.NET only. Also, the examples do not use code-behind.

Summary: For such a thick book, I was disappointed
Review: I bought the book hoping it would be a good reference as I try to learn my way around ASP.NET. Too often it didn't cover the question I had. I have found nothing that presents a good way to create rows against a DataSet or DataView. In the whole Create/Restore/Update/Delete (CRUD) system that we work in, this book leaves out the 'C'. If I'm mistaken, let me know!

This is an example of a few of the things I expected a book of nearly 1400 pages to cover, but was disappointed with.

Summary: Outstanding!
Review: This is the best web programming book I've ever bought. The writing is very clear and all topics are covered in great depth. With just this one book, you'll be able to write high performance, scalable web applications. The only downer is that they forgot to package the cd that the author keeps referring to! Also, C# programmers beware: all the code is in VB.NET.

Summary: Best ASP.NET book I've seen so far
Review: I have four ASP.Net books, but this is the one that's by my side constantly. A lot of thought has gone into the examples... when I have something in mind that I want to code, I look in the book and usually find something similiar.

I come to .net from writing classic ASP, which is another reason this book is good for me... everything is written in VB.net, which isn't too much of a stretch from VBscript. I have way too much else to learn to deal with learning C#! It's also peppered with notes about differences between classic and .net.

I also found some subjects in here that I didn't find anywhere else, specifically the use of GDI.net to create images on-the-fly. I did find some examples on sites, but I couldn't get anything to work until after I had this book in my hands.

If you come from a classic ASP background and choose VB.net for your coding, this is the book!

Summary: Very good coverage.
Review: This book covers a lot of the nitty-gritty whereas other books skim over everything in as little detail as possible. Granted I was looking for a C# book, but this will suffice until a good C# book comes out. And to the guy who said C# was the official language, why then is the default Page Language VB? Yes, Microsoft will provide most documentation in C#, but they're so interchangeable with classes and data types, it really doesn't matter.

Summary: Simply outstanding!
Review: This is the best book I have read on ASP.NET so far. The book is very well organized and is full of quality examples. Not only are the examples excellent, but also the author takes the time to provide a quality and detailed explanation of each example.

The book focuses on almost all aspetcs of ASP.NET in a professional manner. But I find the book to be suitable for levels. Though ADO.NET is not covered in great detail, an excellent overview and rich examples are provided.

Also the nice thing about this book is that all examples are in both VB.NET and C#.

Summary: Great ASP.Net concepts and code book - more C# please!
Review: This is a great book for learning about ASP.Net controls and capabilities. The book is detailed and provides good explainations of concepts. The only beef I have with it is that the examples are all VB.Net. The examples are good though, and most aren't too difficult to translate to C#. Were I a VB.Net developer, I would give this book 5 stars. I almost gave it 5 anyway.

Summary: Very well written
Review: I purchased this book to help me get up and running with .NET. Just like Walther's ASP 2.0 Unleased book, it is well written with independent examples that are clear and easy to follow. (It's always nice to be able to jump to a particular topic without having to read 2 chapters back, trying to figure out what the rest of the code in an example does!) Also, he has sections throughout the book that display the differences between "classic ASP" and .NET which can be helpful. It doesn't really bother me, but every once in a while, he refereces a CD that had the code snippits....there's no CD in this book. I good buy for anyone that already has some programming experience.
