Rating: Summary: Great book, got me up and running.. Review: Would highly recommend this book for someone trying to get an head start with .net programming. Got me up and running using asp.net, helping me develop my application swiftly. Book provides great working to the point examples. Does not cover topics like using crystal reports and advanced data control. All in all a great buy. nm, ny.
Rating: Summary: Great for veteran ASP/VB Programmers jumping into ASP.NET Review: It's hard to find a review starting point with a book this good. After shopping around for a few weeks for ASP.NET books I finally decided on this one. I have read the majority of it and I can honestly say it is one of the best tech books I have ever read.First of all the book has full code with every section. Meaning when you learn to update a database, the author shows you then entire page, not just the update part. The book is laid out in an easy to read and understand fashion. There are no confusing hierarchy charts with small code chunks thrown in. There is a generous code/discussion mix to give you the big picture as well as the code level hands on work. The only thing I did notice about this book is that it does not dive into the low level brains of the ASP.NET system. What does that mean? Many times authors will go into the low level nuts and bolts of a programming platform. They will drown on about how data gets in, gets out, what route it takes on the way, and who it talks to while getting there. This is great for some people, but personally I can do without it. Read a Wrox professional book and you will see what I mean. FYI - I own JSP for Professionals and love it as much as this book, including the low level stuff :). This book dives straight into ASP.NET. If you have no prior ASP or VB experience, I suggest picking up a Learning ASP.NET book to go with this one because the author jumps right in and starts cramming ASP.NET into you head. This book is a big read, but a lot of it is code. This is great because once you have jumped and learned ASP.NET you can shelf this book and use it as reference. NOTE: This books examples are in ASP.NET/VB.NET, meaning there is no real mention of any other language such a C#. This is something I actually like because I can concentrate on learning the architecture on an easy language. Then I can buy a small C# book if I want to work in C# or any other language. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: Outstanding work! Review: ASP.NET Unleashed is the one programming book that sits on my desk and doesn't move. Stephen Walther's writing style is both clear, and (amazingly enough for technical writers) very, very focused. The book provides the reader with not only a sound foundation of theory but also practical application of that theory in real-life applications. And what's more, it doesn't attempt to replace the ASP.NET manuals, rather is expands on them to provide clear and useful examples that you will find yourself referring back to day after day. This book is not only the best book on ASP.NET out there, it is quite possibly one of the best programming books around, period.
Rating: Summary: A very good reference Book. Review: It has very practicle examples. The book is well written and organized. All the examples are in Visual Basic, so if you are a C# programmer you have your work cut out for you. The case of "famous missing CD" is frustrating....
Rating: Summary: THE book to buy for ASP.NET Review: Not only is Stephen a nice guy in person and a very gifted teacher, but his writing is outstanding. As if that weren't enough, the content of this book is a programmer's lifeblood. ASP.NET Unleashed takes you through just about every imaginable object you could want to use in ASP.NET, with clear, concise examples that a beginner can understand. Every piece of code works (hardly a guarantee with instructional manuals these days), and there is so much material that I will be referring back to the book for years to come. Buy this book.
Rating: Summary: fantastic Review: This book is fantastic. Me personal this book is one of 2 that are my only reference on paper to learning asp.net. The other is "Programming Data-Driven Web Applications with ASP.net" where unleashed falls over is that it is totally VB, but the other book is shown in VB and C#. Unleashed is better with the web form side of things. But that aside both books are complete, and I would not pass this book up as a blob of paper sitting on your computer desk. If you are like me, you always look for more then one book when learning something new. It is always worth while to bounce ideas of more then one writer. I would get both books and you would not need to buy any other books on the topic ASP.NET.
Rating: Summary: The guy is brilliant Review: Stephen Walther, you are a legend. This has got to be one of the best computer books I have ever read (on a par with OLAP Unleashed). You have the uncanny ability to pre-empt my questions and then provide clear, concise answers. I like how you follow your discussion with real-world examples, eg "This is the User Control ... this is what is does ... this is how you code it ... you would use it in this situation." I was once a Windows app programmer with little knowledge of ASP, now in a little under a month I am an expert ASP.NET Programmer thanks to your book !! Can you just make sure you include the CD next time !!
Rating: Summary: Good book Review: This book covers almost everything you need to know in ASP .Net programming in an easy-to-follow way. It can be a good tutorial for ASP .Net newbies and a good reference book for experienced ASP .Net programmers.
Rating: Summary: The best Review: This is the best book about apsx. You will learn from this one
Rating: Summary: A Great ASP.NET Resource Review: This book, without a doubt, has the most coverage of ASP.NET. The reasons are as follows: First, the coverage on ADO.NET with ASP.NET is fabulous. Actually, I took some of the code that he used in some of the chapters and was able to modify it for some projects at the company I worked for. Second, the downloadable code is extremely useful and is organized very well. Third, the material it covers is more than some of the other publishers' books. Some of the other publishers want you to buy more books, just to cover certain topics. Overall, this book is a great buy and a great reference.
