Summary: Awesome Book
Review: If you're starting out with asp.net (like myself) you need to get this book. Very straightforward explanations by Walther with good examples. Code is available online as well. You can't go wrong with this one.

Summary: The worse computer book I have ever bought
Review: Almost all the code does not work, including the most important part of ASP.net, ADO.net. Besides, this book doesn't cover C# code for ASP.net and there is no customer support at the author's Web site. Futhermore, some SuperExpert controls discussed in the book cannot be found at the author's Web site.

Summary: Not based on Visual Studio .NET
Review: Other reviewers who cite the well-organized structure and comprehensive content of this book are right on the money. This book excels in detailed coverage of the key topics, addressed from the perspective of developing a real-world web application. As an experienced programmer, however, I did find some of the long-winded explanations of basic concepts tiresome.

I own Visual Studio .NET and was surprised to quickly learn that the author's development environment is nothing less than Notepad. All the examples in the book showcase Notepad. Why not take advantage of the great IDE that's found in Visual Studio? While reading this book, I had the impression that I was missing out on important insights on how to best utilize Visual Studio to develop applications more quickly and effectively- in addition to information on configuring Visual Studio. That's why this book doesn't do it for me. On the other hand, if you're on a mission to prove to the world that you're a 'real' programmer who writes code on an non-GUI sytem with something like Notepad, then this book is for you. Anyone who's married to Dreamweaver, HomeSite, or other HTML editors will also find the book a great read.

Summary: An excellent reference book with good exploration of ASP.net
Review: Just to brief you I have been teaching field for quite a number of years and also have been in ASP programming for sometime. I love to read books. I had picked 2 of the previous books on classic ASP by the Stephen. Both books have been a great help for me in development. So I blindly picked up this book and didn't bother to pick up any other book. A few months later just to upgrade myself I restarted on this book. Well I covered almost the whole book chapter by chapter. And by the end of the book I was confident to set up a site. I made extensive use of the book. I could use most of the advanced techniques of ADO.net, form authentication and also set up two XML webservice. It has been a great resource and a companion in my devoplment environment.
Is it a book for beginner or professional?? Well the author has not left a stone unturned to give a feel and exposure to almost all aspects of ASP.net. He really lays a through foundation from where a developer can leap ahead. So if you are a beginner or intermediate programmer I recommend this book. But beaware you will also have to take a reference book for Visual basic .net or you will find yourself wondering in few situations. Infact to throuoghly implement the ASP.net technology I recommend that you also get hands on Vb.net language.(I am not talking of window forms).
ASP.net is so vast that a thousand pages can just give you a feel and a knowledge of the varous technologies. And that is wht the author has done. I believe that was his motive. Also he didn't spare an opportunity to give a glimpse of the heights one can reach through ASP.net. Hence if you are looking into advanced programming books get one for that particular topic. ie.. for ADO.net get an advanced ADO.net book and XML webservice get advanced webservice book. Please do not try to get all of the ASP.net technology in one book. If any book author promises that check the size of the book. It has to be more than 2000 pages.
One more thing this book does not cover is development using visual studio. Most of the examples are not done in code behind approach. So a developer using only visual studio may find this approach a bit confusing. Hence a beginner trying to develop pages in Visual Studio should give a second thought.

Summary: Excellent ASP.NET Book
Review: This book is one of the most well organized and comprehensive resources on ASP.NET programming. The author covers almost every aspect of ASP.NET programming and covers each subject very well.

All samples are written in VB.NET. I did not have experience with VB.NET before reading this book, but had no trouble understanding the samples and porting them to C#.

Before I bought this book I read through the sample chapter on Amazon[.com] .... I recommend that you do the same.

The author mentions samples on a CD but this book did not have a CD.

In my opinion this book is well worth the money (even if it does not have the CD).

Summary: Excellent Book on ASP.NET
Review: I consider this my bible on ASP.NET. If you only own one book on ASP.NET, this is the one. Covers everything and everything well.
Very clearly written. Uses very simple code samples to get across the meaning at hand. One of the best technical books I have ever read.

Summary: Good book but lots of errors
Review: It would serve as a good reference book but there are a lot of errors in the code listing. I also would give you the basic ideas of everything connected with ASP.NET and for specialized learning, I would turn to books from Wrox or O'Reilly

Summary: My Daily Bible
Review: I am new to ASP but have being coding in VB 6 and decided to purchase this book. I was not disappointed at all. This is an excellent book for those new to ASP.NET. I use this book daily and it has provided me with information need for me to build my first ever web site. My web site is data driven and includes a member's only area taking advantage of session state, form authentication using SQL server, templates you name it. All by using this book by Stephen. He not only knowledgeable about the technology, but he also discusses the pros & cons on why to use one over the next. This is very valuable because you do not waste time trying to decide how to implement something. He tells you. Well-done Stephen.
