Rating: Summary: !GREAT! NO VS.NET or other "Visual programming?" !GREAT! Review: This is a great book, it teaches everything without recurring to Visual Studio, which is great so you know exactly what it is in the code, and you get the really knowledge of this technology.I'm a manager in an IT company, and I must say that Visual ?programmers? don't last too much, they click and click over Visual Studios make us spend too much in external components, and when the client want's something too much specific they just can't do it because they don't know source code, they only know visual windows. (it's incredible but I trust more in my workers that learn from books and work over notepad or other text editor on their source code than in Microsoft Certificated Programmers which come ready to make us spend money in Visual Tools from MS of course) So this book is great to get an in depth real knowledge of VB.NET Script at ASP.NET (.aspx) files. This is a great book, I bought all the books of Stephen Walther since old ASP editions (which i still use sometimes)... this guy rocks, and I know what I say because I buy dozens of books for my department every year. Cheers, JV
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Programming Reference Review: I'm going to be needing to pick up a new copy of this because I've nearly warn out the copy I have now. The best aspect of this book is its coverage of the .NET framework. I refer to this book even while programming in VB.NET. Also, its coverage of ADO.NET is untouched. There is no other reference book that I reference as often.
Rating: Summary: A thorough dissapointment Review: When I first started looking for an ASP.NET book about 12 months ago, I saw that most sites recommended this one. But after I had purchased it I realized that this one had 2 major problems: 1. The author uses text editors like notepad instead of VS.NET 2. Everything's written in VB6.0 and not in VB.NET If the above two don't seem like problems to you, go ahead and buy it. Also, I couldn't understand why many reviews have raved about the book. Even without the above two points I think its an average book. There are much better ones in the market that can give both knowledge and also help in the real world applications.
Rating: Summary: Worth the extra price Review: THis book leaves nothing out. The only deficiency is that the ADO part and the complete sample applications assume an MS SQL server backend. It would have been better if he had built the sample applcaitions for MS access or mysql because they are much cheaper & simpler.
Rating: Summary: Pretty much the best and most in-depth ASP.NET book out Review: Who I wouldn't recommend this book for: very, very advanced ASP.NET programmers. Whom I would: everyone else. Yes, it really is that good. The code examples are useful, very readable, and not skimped on at all; plus, every piece of code (covering everything from tracing to inheritance to custom server controls to error handling to...) is included in both VB.NET and C# on the accompanying CD-Rom. I have about 20-25 ASP.NET books and this is the most useful. It's a big book, but not foreboding and dense by any means; if you're reading this review, chances are you'd benefit from this book.
Rating: Summary: asp.net unleashed Review: This is a great book which I have read on asp.net. I had read several book on asp.net but This is the great great book which author cover on the book. He is a great author. He has 2 books. all these are perfect. I hope he writes more. You need to read this one.
Rating: Summary: Not as Good at the First -- Examples Already on Web Review: I was disappointed by this book. All of the material covered in this book is available at Microsoft's .NET web site at 100% less cost. It covers only the most basic of examples and if you want real world solutions and think you still need a book after looking at Microsoft's site it would be best to choose a different book. This book seems like just a way for SAMS to make money just like a bad movie sequel. Save your money!
Rating: Summary: somebody forgot about visual studio.net! Review: I just bought this book online thinking that it would come with the code behind files etc.. in c# and vb.net. To my suprise there is nothing but .aspx files that you can't do anything with. Hello.. this is the 2nd edition and apparently the author is not aware that 99.99% of people using .net use visual studio.net and not notepad!!! The material is still good but the implementation is very poor for a 2nd edition.
Rating: Summary: One of the best web development books ever! Review: I am not attempting to exaggerate to make a point when i say this book is thusfar not only the best book on ASP.NET but it is the best and most comprehensive book I've ever read on a web development topic (and I've read many from many different publishers on php, coldfusion, asp, SQL, etc...) This book is just too too comprehensive. The author covers nearly every topic you can think of. And what really makes this book so good is that no time is wasted in long drawn out explanations. Out of all the 1500 pages, there is code and examples on each. This is the way to make a computer book since its not a iterary topic. The book is like topic, examples; topic, examples, topic examples one after the other. The author explains just enough for the reader to understand the code which makes the book so useful and an efficient read. I am an experienced web developer that wanted to get into ASP.NET. This was my first ASP.NET book. Since it, I've purchased and read 2 other asp.net books to see if I needed any more. After finishing this book, other books seriously look like jokes compared to this one. Looking at other asp.net books, they don't contain 1/15th of the information covered in this book and that is an understatement. If you are pretty good at any web programming language this will be the ONLY book you need to learn ASP.NET. Only if you have no experience would I say that this may be too much for you. Lastly, I wanted to thank the author. It is very rare to see an author dedicate so much of his time and knowledge to one book. A lot of people just want to get their books published. Any web developer or author will know that this book must've taken really long to complete. On top of it all, there arent many inconsistencies for a book this large. Everything you care to know about ASP.NET is in this book (basics, ado.net, data binding, web services, xml issues, mobile issues, custom controls, graphics on the fly, validation,...more) plus an e-commerce and job site. The only thing missing that you may want is a little primer on VB.NET syntax.
Rating: Summary: A great book Review: This book has a lot of information and would be a great addition to anyone's .Net library.
