Rating: Summary: Will be a classic of nonfiction literature Review: "Angelhead," is a memoir written by Greg Bottoms about his older brother, Michael, who took six hits of aid at an Ozzy Osbourne concert. This was an extremely amazing, shocking, and all together extraordinarily well written book. The great detail that he went into, and the account of events that took place within their family were gripping and very emotional. Greg Bottoms thouroughly describes the emotion and feelings of every family member, while they were dealing with his brothers tragedy. The book was so compelling that you could feel what the family was going through. It was a fairly short book, only consisting of two hundred and seven pages, and I was unable to put the book down. I read it in one sitting, and was saddened when it was over. Even though it was short, the contents were so strong that the author got his point across and really left an impression. This is the type of book that really makes you think about life. It really makes you think about life. It really expands your horizans to how you can create your own future for yourself. Michael, Gregs brother, made the mistake of experimenting with narcotics, and after one bad night, his life was changed forever. Greg, on the other hand, experimented slightly with drugs, but was able to get his life on track and create a promising future for himself. This memoir was not only intersting to read, but it was also very realistic and inspirational about how precious life and decisions are.

Rating: Summary: Makes me thank God for my family! Review: Dear me . . . ANGELHEAD. Reading this story conjures up questions like, Who? What? When? Where? How? and Why? A book like that makes me sick to my stomach wondering, How/why am I so lucky/blessed? What did I do right? or Is it just the luck of the draw? I should run, hop, skip, jump for joy about not being born into such a head-on collision of lives. Of course, I'm not perfect. My life's not a bowl full of cherries BUT who can complain compared to that sack of suffering? I'm floating, floating, then SPLAT! squashed like a bug against the windshield of God. ANGELHEAD starts in hyperdrive, shifts into light speed, then doesn't let up until it's too late. There's no looking back in that book. Like being shoved through hell's hallway, then kicked into an ocean of mud.
Rating: Summary: A Life In Madness Review: Greg always wanted a normal life but with Michael as a brother who was diagnosed as a acute paranoid schizphrenia it wasnt passible. The book was by Greg Bottoms, born in Hampton Virginia in 1970. He has had essays and journals in the Beaconbest of 1999, creative Nonfiction, nerve, prism International and else where. he now lives with his wife. i liked his book very much it was wonderful but very sad. To see the things that Greg the author had to go through. Watching his brother lose his mind after taking LSD at the age of ten not realy understanding what is going on. BEing beaten by Michael becuase he wouldnt mow the lawn. Even after he moved away he was still stuck when Michael set the house on fire and tried to kill his family. It is still very sad because Michael didnt understand what was going on in his head everything was confusing and twisted to him. I would recomend this book for anyone who asked me.

Rating: Summary: A Family's Descent into Chaos Review: Greg Bottoms is a fine writer: honest and brave. In ANGELHEAD, he describes a tormented, mentally ill sibling, and he exposes the pain the illness brought on the whole family. From the outside, the Bottoms family was middle-class suburban. When his older brother Michael began experiencing psychotic episodes, though, that world was turned upside-down. A few neighbors and friends glimpsed what was going on, but the day-to-day tension of living with a man who could, in an instant, turn violently delusional must have been nerve-wracking for Greg and his parents. At first, Michael's erratic behavior was attributed to recreational drugs or a lack of self-discipline. It wasn't until the Bottoms family was faced with the diagnosis of schizophrenia that Michael craziness finally made sense. Michael destroyed their home, and their lives; he drained their emotional resources, he even tried to kill them. They doggedly tried to stand by him and get help for him, but it wasn't enough. Is every schizophrenic as scary or sad as Michael? No--Greg points out again and again that Michael's case was extreme, not all people with this problem are violent or unmanageable. The real tragedy of this case is that Michael could only get the help he needed after he committed a serious crime, one that nearly claimed the lives of Greg's parents and brother Ron. I know people who grew up in homes with a mentally-ill family member. Most "outsiders" would question whether this sort of thing can happen, if it isn't an exaggeration. Well, it does indeed happen, and it leaves scars on everyone. Greg Bottoms had the courage to come forward and share what he went through. There are many, many families out there who need to read this book, to know they are not alone.
Rating: Summary: How to Write Review: Other reviewers here do a fine job discussing the medical and pyschological aspects of Greg Bottoms' work. I want to make a brief comment about the writing... These 200 pages are as pure a lesson on "How to Write" as you will ever encounter. Page after page of pure, clean, unfiltered thought. Not a single word seems to be wasted. Not a single word rings false. A brilliant, captivating work that deserves a much wider audience. Despite its stark subject matter and shocking conclusion, 'Angelhead' is a book that we need to press into the hands of friends and co-workers.
Rating: Summary: Angelhead--Great Book Review: This book was very enjoyable. I'm schizophrenic too (not as bad as Michael), and it kept me up until 2 am reading it. If you like suspenseful and descriptive books, you will enjoy this.
Rating: Summary: Want to know about living with a paranoid schizophrenic ? Review: This book will shed light on this subject without getting preachy or advocating some new or recycled treatment plan. The story is predictably unpredictable and is written in a well-formatted, page-turning story. I got the feeling that Greg Bottoms wanted to give his brother the respect and understanding that is so lacking towards the mentally ill, all the while painting the picture of the impossibility of having a true dyadic relationship.
Rating: Summary: the best book I've ever read! Review: This is absolutely the most wonderful book I have ever read! Greg Bottoms is a truly talented writer and I think everyone should read this book. It is truly amazing.
