Review: I've just finished this book, and find myself very impressed. Mr. Kendall's writing skills make the narrative flow nicely; the details he provides -- of people, places, the sequence of events, and how all that related to the larger picture -- constantly amazed and delighted this reader. His forthright and honest candor in relating personal experiences (including youthful romances) enhances the sense of realism most effectively. Readers who will identify with much of this charming story include anyone who comes from a rural setting or a large family, remembers the World War II years, knows about determination to pursue higher education via the GI Bill, worked in journalism and/or the foreign service. His insights into the cultural values of China, from both his colorful wartime Army duty and subsequent experiences in that part of the world, are particularly rewarding. It's a book worth reading twice.
