Rating: Summary: The Lemon Dance Review: An interesting and true story that keeps you turning the pages - I really enjoyed the book. His story is one of self-discovery told with with earthiness and humor. Helmey is funny and I love the southern witicisms! Its also a story of conflict, tragedy, resolution, and ultimately triumph - I think a lot of us will identify with it.
Rating: Summary: Mucho Excitement Review: Fascinating character and very interesting story - and it is True! Would highly recommend for anyone that likes great character development, patriotism, romance and most importantly a message about man's most important discovery in life.
Rating: Summary: The Lemon Dance Sings Also Review: Having no knowledge of the hyjacking event present in The Lemon Dance, I first had to create a visual range upon which to read and absorb this non-fiction novel. It provided an interesting reading experience and heightened my anticipation of what was just around the bend.I was soon drawn into the events by the Author's uses of words and phrases that lifted the dialogues from among the ordinary giving them a range of emotions from subtle to in-your-face humor to the fondness shown between Reds and his collection of friends. While the dialogues were uniquely crafted and paced they remained realistic and uncontrieved. One could easily feel that they could jump into the conversation and offer the next amusing comment. I was impressed with the Author's method of introducing the women who influenced his life from wife Angelyn to his mother. Without laboring in detail you immediately get a feel for Angelyn's character as being that of a strong woman who takes no slack from her man by her refusal to accept her husband's limp explanation as to why his drawers were on backwards. Mr. Helmey developed his true characters with depth using fresh and daring words and rich characterization. He is shown risking personal chastisement by revealing many of his former uncomplementary personal views on race and the role of women which only contributed to getting to know Reds who speaks as he does. As the events unfolded, this reader felt artistic movement and a progression toward Mr. Helmey's decision to hijack the airplane to Cuba. The Author provided anchoring in a number of historical events such as Pearl Harbor, Martin Luther King's assassination, President Kennedy's famous "Ask not What you Can do For your Country", and John Johh's salute as well as changes in social and moral philosophies. Such events are well not forgotten. The Lemon Dance was well written. Betty McZorn

Rating: Summary: An Interesting Book Review: I could hardly wait for time to continue this book once I had started reading it. Reds is fearless and has a depth of character which is inspiring and I could not wait to see what crazy mess he would get into next. I also admire his ability to tell all and you feel like he holds nothing back. He never missed an opportunity to get involved in a just cause, even in his later life with his trips to Haiti, to which I can relate, since my sister has made trips to Haiti to take portable water purification systems and train the Haitians to use them. The book also relates to the unstructured lives of the youth of our generation of the 40's & 50's, when you used your wits to make decisions. Reds is a man's man. America could use a few more good men like him.
Rating: Summary: Great book! Review: I have not completely read a book in 25 years, though I used to be an avid reader. After meeting Reds in Savannah, I had to buy and I couldn't put it down. He is a fascinating man who has written a fascinating book. Can't wait for a movie!
Rating: Summary: Lemon Dance Review: I met Reds in Savannah, and after talking o him for about 30 minutes, I had to buy the book. It was an interesting look at how a young man came of age, then got involved in a plot much bigger than he could have ever imagined. The writing was easy to read and humerous. Reds is one of the last true adventurers, and I am glad to have met him.
Rating: Summary: A Must Read. Review: In all my years of being an ardent fan of non-fiction, my imagination has never been quite so stirred as by this heartfelt account of life and personal groth during one of this nation's most tumultuous times...The setting for much of Reds book is Savannah Georgia, whose quaint yet quirky nature was previously explored to great acclaim in the landmark publication,'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil'... this tale is decidely different, however, as one of rather than tragedy..It's the fascinating true story of an American patriot's sudden decision to hijack a U.S. airliner to Cuba. This unusual saga of a small town boy who caused an International incident is unlike anything I've ever read. It is alternately sweetly nostalgic and gripping. Reds Helmey is the quintessential everyman... restless, passionate, and vulnerable in ways that every reader will find achingly familiar. A terrific book that no doubt will have Hollywood calling very soon.
Rating: Summary: a true story by a true patriot Review: Very few of us ever commit to a bigger than life ideal to the point that we actually attempt it particularly if it requires us to lay it all on the line."The Lemon Dance" is a story about one man's commitment to a bigger than life ideal and his attempt to carry it out. It matters not that Reds Helmy's commitment to a bigger than life ideal may have been so intense that it may have temporarily suspended his connection with reality. (which I doubt) What matters is his level of commitment, and the subsiquent effort to carry it out. "The lemon Dance" is a true story written by a true patriot.
