Summary: In the pantheon of Gotti-related books...
Review: ..."Tough Guy" is definitely worth reading. Having read just about all the mob books that are in print (everything from Wise Guy, to Murder Machine, Last Mafioso, etc.), Maloney's book is definitely entertaining and somewhat enlightening. Other reviewers (below) have challenged Maloney for his truthfulness (which may, in fact, be in question), but many of the details in the book are easily verifiable. Maloney certainly doesn't overstate his ability to plan criminal operations or choose the right 'crimey' (crime partner)...

Two thoughts immediately come to mind:

1) Maloney truly was a tough guy. Surviving ten bullet-holes (including eight at one time) in a series of attempts to fulfill the contract on his life will get you on the "tough guy" list. Maloney was hooked up with some of the celebrities of "the life" including John Gotti, Jimmy Burke (of Lufthansa and DeNiro/Goodfellas fame), the Coonans and Mickey Featherstone(Westies) and a host of others.

2) Maloney was definitely a couple of sandwiches shy of a picnic. His trust of completely untrustworthy characters, his complete lack of preparation for significant criminal operations, his willingness to attack and kidnap made men... all pointed to, shall we say, a less than gifted intellect. His continued survival despite this limitation is testament to his toughness and durability.

If you enjoy mob books, you'll definitely find "Tough Guy" worth reading.

Summary: "Tough guy" is completely fact!
Review: As Eddie Maloney's best and most trusted friend for the last 14 years I am more qualified than anyone to say that Eddie may have been alot of things to alot of people but he was "no liar".
I know William Hoffman too and I saw the thousand pages of material that Eddie wrote in preparation for the printing of the book. William Hoffman is a first rate writer but Eddie Maloney was also a very intelligent man and very loyal, no one does 23 years in the pen if they are a rat. Eddie did what he did for the reasons he stated! Eddie was the best and most loyal friend I've had in my life up until his death. I consider him my brother and could rely on him and he me as a brother!
Eddie was a good man, he made mistakes but haven't we all!
Rest in peace my dear friend and brother...

Summary: More Like Dumb Guy....
Review: I thought this book was a peice of work written to make this dumb irish man look good. Through out the book there are many examples that make this so called "tough guy" seem more powerful than John Gotti.... If you like fairy tales this is the book for you.

Summary: Tough Guy
Review: In my opinion this is the best true crime book i've ever read. For once a man like Eddie Maloney had the courage to expose the mob and the fbi for the treacherous people they truly are.

Summary: Tough Guy...Not Made Man
Review: Mr.Eddie Maloney may not have been a made man.But he lived the life of a tight guy.Knowing the likes of John Gotti he wasn't on the inside but did work in the same circles as them.He was locked away for alot of his life. But also made some good scores.

Summary: Tough guy
Review: One of the most interesting books I read. I must point out that Eddie had no choice but to trust the FBI because 2 attempts were made on his life. Eddie was wrong about who ordered the hits mainly because the FBI wanted him to think it was Gotti. To Eddies' credit he squares things with Gotti's lawyer, Bruce Cutler when he finds out he's been duped. One of the most disturbing things was the treachery used by the FBI when they were willing to frame him and hang him out to dry, by kicking him out of the witness protection program. Yes Eddie was a menace and self serving hood. Nontheless there is now a decency and honor about him as he tries to walk an honest path. I see Eddie as a good kid,bad breaks, bad choices and hopefully salvation as he tries to live decent.
