Summary: Disappointing
Review: For a recent book about Robespierre, this work is not only disappointing, but terribly antiquated. One reason is because it relies on a discredited source, John Wilson Croker's 1835 essay on Robespierre, an error-filled and venomous document that is given little standing by modern day scholars of repute. If you wish to earn about Robespierre, you should first turn to David P. Jordan's Revolutionary Career of Maximilien Robespierre, then to Norman Hampson, J.M. Thompson, G. Rude and Max Gallo. I have read over 30 books in English and French on Robespierre, and those are the best, most informative and most balanced. Hardman's work, on the other hand, is a tired, hostile rehashing that relies too heaviy on Croker. Pass on this one.
