Rating: Summary: "The symbol gives rise to thought ..." Review: Paul Ricoeur is the most sophisticated and learned Christian philosopher working today. Yet one need not be a religious believer, as I am not, to appreciate his brilliant use of phenomenological foundations in building a hermeneutics of freedom and identity, as well as a profound analysis of the problematic of evil that is relevant and meaningful for us. Having devoted a book-length essay to Ricoeur's work entitled "Paul Ricoeur and the Hermeneutics of Freedom" (2004) and having learned a great deal from Professor Reagan's scholarship, I can recommend this book without reservations to all students of philosophy.
