Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Funny, self-deprecating, mostly honest.
Review: Georgia Sen. Herman Talmadge's father, Gov. Eugene Talmadge, was one of the all-time political personalities, and Herman does a fine job bringing his father's appeal and his own political apprenticeship to life. He also does quite a fine job recounting the Senate Watergate committee from the inside. One might wish, though, that he'd been a little more transparent in his account of his long-term, energetic resistance -- first as governor, then as U.S. senator -- to _Brown v. the Board of Education of Topeka, KS_ and its progeny. The book is full of laughs, but is typical of memoirs in omitting the least appealing aspects of its subject's career.
