Rating: Summary: Impressive work, the effort shows Review: When I first saw this book I was very excited about its possibilities and the prospect of a great and enlightening read. I have been a student of the Civil War for many years and hoped that this would be a star performer of the documentation of the conflict. Whenever I set about a new work on the subject, I try to stay as objective as possible, but this book tried my patience from the start. There were a lot of first hand accounts and primary sources cited in the work and this offered some positive points, at least at first. This unfortunately, was the high point for the book. From the beginning, it read like a first draft of a technical report with a very rough and confusing narrative. Even people who know the battle well have a hard time following the disjointed nature of the story. There was no analysis offered, just a dry account of one piece of action after another. The maps - which appear to be hand drawn over the basic National Park Battlefield map - are not well executed and alas, not very useful. I am afraid that I could not recommend this work when there are so many other well written, organized and worthwhile studies in existence.
