Rating: Summary: Wow! Review: I spent some time in Morocco as a tourist, and made a particular effort to get to know the people and culture. But, the Morocco described in this book is SO much more interesting, personal, and emotional than anybody could see on their own during a simple vacation. Living "in country" allows a far more intimate view of the people and their thoughts. The portraits painted in this book are especially interesting in light of today's conflicts between the West and the Arabs. And, the stories are told in such as warm-hearted way, I felt I was there with the author.
Rating: Summary: Auntie Mame lives through Auntie Gloria Marchick Review: This grandmother sees a Morocco that few other interlopers experience. The story is honestly related in a personal tone that makes the reader feel he/she is co-traveler with Ms. Marchick. Her experience with culture shock is classic while her survival is admirable. This is a must read for anyone who finds a good read a good companion. Don't buy one. Buy two and give your best friend a treat.
Rating: Summary: A True Life Adventure Better Than the Movies... Review: To imagine a seemingly innocent year teaching in Morocco could turn into a REAL LIFE ADVENTURE with more twists, turns and intrigue than 'Casablanca'...I literally couldn't put this book down for the five hours it took me to finish. I'm glad Ms. Marchick had the foresight and skills to chronicle and record so captivatingly her rollercoaster ride through the still dark passages of this progressive (NOT!) Mideast country. You don't have to be a teacher, Jewish, young or old to FEEL with her as she takes us on this enlightening trip via the pages of this short, easy-to-read book.
