Summary: This was a lot of fun!
Review: From nice Catholic college girl/ Manhatten model to society spy in Nazi-infested Spain (with a matador for a beau) to proper wife of a Spanish Grandee: this is a woman every bit as strong and heroic as her WWII brothers. Code-named Tiger, she is the Right Stuff. And yet she manages to convey a sort of Mary Tyler Moore edge as she faces the stomach-churning dangers in operations which did not end in 1945 or after her marriage. Her "cover" mustn't be much good anymore, but while she faced assassins in this account, a sequel called "The Spy Went Dancing" has her using her access to high Spanish society to identify stolen art work after the war and trace connections between ex-Nazis and the international underworld, including Soviet opportunists. Among her intimates was the late Duchess of Windsor (quite the player herself!) This is one lady who need never retire! I hope she will keep reporting to her eager readers from time to time.

Summary: A Spanish teacher recommends "The Spy Wore Red"...to ALL!
Review: I have never read a book twice, but I read this one twice. The first time I read this book was in 1987. I later read "The Spy Wore Silk" and "The Spy Went Dancing". I loved them all, but The Spy Wore Red is my favorite. I just recently read this book again (May 2002), and really enjoyed it more the second time around. The book is fast paced, never boring, and a real page turner. It is hard to believe this is a true story. It has an incredible ending - one of the best endings in any book I have ever read. I would love to meet the Countess of Romanones Aline. She has to be one of the most fascinating women in history. I highly suggest reading it - you will not be disappointed.

Review: I have never read a book twice, but I read this one twice. The first time I read this book was in 1987. I later read "The Spy Wore Silk" and "The Spy Went Dancing". I loved them all, but The Spy Wore Red is my favorite. I just recently read this book again (May 2002), and really enjoyed it more the second time around. Review: I read this book while on a boat. I could not sleep until I read the last page. The Countess wrote a vivid account of her activities which drew me into the pages and in every place she was during this period of her life. It was exciting and sometimes breath taking because of how she would place herself in danger to do the best job she could, and she WAS GOOD!! I also had the privlege of seeing her on a "Talk Show" in Seattle, Wa. USA. What a charming lady she is. Would like to read it again but my book sank with the boat. Long after I was off the boat. Summary: This book is an edge-of-your-seat thriller - truly exciting!
Review: I've been a fanatical lover of mysteries, detective novels, and spy novels since I was a child. The Spy Wore Red is one of the best and most exciting books that I have ever read. What makes it even more exciting is that it's a true story. I couldn't get a hold of the Countess' second book: The Spy Went Dancing fast enough!

Review: Reading and re-reading The Spy Wore Red is a wonderful experience! Most of your other reviewers agree, but there are two aspects they seem to miss: the richness of Spanish cultural information and the possibility of a change in role for women. Aline Griffiths is bright, well educated, and departs from traditional women's work to lead a daring, adventurous, downright-dangerous job. As a Spanish teacher, I have recommended The Spy Wore Red to my high school students for years. Several students who later spent their college junior year in Spain have come back to tell me how much this book meant to them and how much more they appreciated it following their sojourn there. They could catch glimpses of the old Spain in the new, simply because they had read this thriller. World War II began as the Spanish Civil War ended(1936-1939), so Aline Griffiths arrived as huge social changes were about to occur in Spain. This book provides a superb peek into the "old" Spain, the Spain of high romance and extraordinarily traditional, now-antiquated values. Yet it is described in context of a delightfully novel-like autobiographical tale. Although it reads better than most spy fiction, one can take notes on Spanish culture on virtually every page. It is engrossing, culture-rich, and shows a young American girl from Pearl River, New York, doing the kinds of things of which only a grownup Nancy Drew type might have dreamed.

Summary: Trust me, this is one of the best books you will ever read!
Review: The Spy Wore Red was one of the best books I have ever read. Not only was the story amazingly true, it was extremely hard to put down. This story, about a female spy's adventures in WWII (hence the name), was truly heart-pounding. There was a romantic plot, an espionage plot, and a SURPRISE ENDING that was one of the best (and saddest) that I have read in years. This is a great book if you are interested in the fascinating story of a remarkable person, and if you have a soft heart. P.S. If you are into WWII history, this makes the book especially interesting and brings the mystery of espionage down to a more human level.

Summary: An exciting and thrilling book!
Review: Wow! That is one of the best books I've ever read. If you enjoy mysteries, adventures, and espionage then this is the book for you. The setting being Spain in World War Two it gives you the inside story of the under cover world of the war. Keeping you on the edge of your seat the whole time the plots range anywhere from a love story to a crime scene. The Countess is an amazing women to have gone through all she has with such grace. I just can't wait ot get my hands on her second book, The Spy Went Dancing!

Summary: Fascinating Page-Turner
Review: Written like a fiction novel, this factual, first-person account of a young woman spy during World War II is absolutely enthralling. You'll get a first-hand look into what it's like to be recruited and trained as a spy, then go on your first assignment, mingling with the highest Spanish society while secretly risking your life to uncover essential Axis secrets. The characters in the novel are rich and compelling, and you never know what's going to happen next to the protagonist/ingenue Aline.
I read this book in the '80s and have remembered it ever since. I finally found it again and reread it. It's just as fascinating now as it was then.
The only drawback: If you read at night, you won't get much sleep because this book is nearly impossible to put down.
