Rating: 5 stars
Summary: An excellent source for personal insight of the Civil War.
Review: I really enjoyed reading this book. The editors do an amazing job of putting together excerpts from about 20 different diaries and the topics discussed in the diaries and letters range from the weather to politics during the Civil War. The diarists and writers are an eclectic group and include many prominent society members from this era. There is also emotional insight into the war as many of the entries discuss the terror caused by raiding soldiers and the loss of close family friends. This is a thoroughly enjoyable book from all aspects and can be read by anyone, including students and those interested in the social aspects of the American Civil War.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: A great cross section of America during the Civil War
Review: The editors have boldly attempted to create a picture of America that is more diverse than most primary source books I have read. They succeed at bringing several different views together that provoke thought and provide insight. While the book may not be exhaustive enough to be a sole source for a class it provides the framework for discussion of many areas of the Civil War.
