Rating: Summary: worth reading Review: This book sucked me in. If you know at least a little bit of new york city... le cirque makes history of nyc.. it is worth of reading~Anna
Rating: Summary: Response from the Author Review: To ZYBYSKO aka Tibet. Nowhere in the book did I even mention the original owner of Lutece, so I'm not sure how you can accuse me of not getting his name right. I never said Mr. Jacobs was a refugee. I write clearly that he had a successful and honored career helping refugees. I have his partners and friends, on record, in the book, giving their opinions of him. Alsace and its surrounding areas are some of the most important ski areas in Europe and the story in question happens in the New York, not in Europe. The restaurants I mention as being family owned, of course, were and are. What other definition would one give for restaurants that are solely owned by a husband and wife. And lastly, Mr. Maccioni when he created Le Cirque, never dreamed he would have restaurants elsewhere in the world.
Rating: Summary: A sycophant to the rich and the flatulent. Review: What a piece of name dropping puff pastry this book is. Despite the recipes peppered throughout the book don't expect to have a greater understanding of food and wine after having read the book. But I guess food and wine is realy not the point of Le Cirque but clearly who sits where and with whom is. I lived in New York throughout the eighties, ate out two or three time a week, and in my circle of foodies Le Cirque was considered a joke. Reading this book only reinforces this view. I remember reading Ruth Reichl's review and thinking "there, told you so." Mr. Maccioni is clearly a clever businessman, and the book details who his clients are. Unfortunately having read the book I still don't want to eat in his restaurant.
