Summary: Maybe a life-changing book.
Review: Cleveland Amory wrote of his beloved cat Polar Bear, "Heaven will be no heaven for me if Polar Bear is not there."

I say heaven will be no heaven for me if Cleveland Amory is not there. Anyone with even a small soft spot in his heart cannot fail to be moved by the stories of the Black Beauty Ranch and the animals of various species that call it home.

Someone recently asked me what I'd do if I didn't need to work for a living. I think I'd want to go to Murchison, Texas and help care for the ranch's residents.

Summary: A Note to the Reader . . .
Review: Even in my dreams I thought more about what Black Beauty Ranch would not be than what it would be. It would not be a place where animals were primarily to be looked at -- rather it would be a place where they were primarily to be looked after. And it would not be a place where animals did what people wanted them to do. Instead, the animals would do whatever they wanted to do, because, finally, it would not be a people's place at all but an animals' place -- a place that the animals felt, from the day they arrived, belonged to them and would always belong to them as long as they lived.

Summary: Ranch of Dreams Made Me Proud To Be A Texan
Review: Having never read anything by Cleveland Amory before I was quite surprised to learn of Black Beauty Ranch in East Texas.Ranch of Dreams opened my eyes to what really goes on behind the circus tents, most haunting and heartwrenching the cruel treatment of the elephants, ripped from their mothers and herds and beaten into submission.Dear Mr Amory;he passed before writing a follow up book. The book is well worth the read,a lesson in human compassion, and when you are finished, pass it on to a friend.

Summary: Ranch of Dreams is Excellent!
Review: I absolutely loved this book. Although difficult to handle when reading about the abuse of animals, it is so well written that you just can't put it down. Cleveland's sense of humor shows through his writing and makes this book a must-read! And, if you haven't been to the Ranch of Dreams - you must go!!! Black Beauty Ranch in TX is the most beautiful place in the world - and the beauty is so much more than what meets the eye!

Summary: Ranch of Dreams left me wanting more.
Review: I guess I just expected more from this book. I wanted more personal experiences and more discussions of individual animals that had been brought to the ranch. I feel that the book was to "general" in its approach. It just wasn't personal enough.

Summary: Very touching.
Review: I was a bit dubious about reading this book, especially after my fiance thrust it at me and demanded that I read it the whole way through. Not really having read anything by Amory before, this was the first time. The stories within the book are at the same time inspiring and heartbreaking. It's wonderful to read about caring and hope in a world that can be so callous and cruel towards the animals. It was inspirational, and after finishing it I made a vow to make a donation towards his efforts. The book documents his honorable cause in great detail, and it would be hard for anyone to find a reason to put the book down.

Summary: heart breaking
Review: This is the best piece of non-fiction ever written. It is about an amazing ranch that takes in abused animals and their stories. The abuse mentioned in this book is horrible. From the tortured wild horses to the outrageous mistreatment of circus elephants. I could not put this book down. The only times that I did was when the tears blurred the pages.
