Summary: Appalling Revisionist History
Review: Cheers to any book celebrating the great black men and women of history, but Mr. Rogers either didn't do his homework or knowingly rewrote history. Claiming that Cleopatra, Hannibal, Ankhenaton and Hatshepsut were black is patently absurd. Cleopatra belonged to Egypt's Ptolemaic dynasty of Macedonians, and the great Carthaginian Hannibal was Phoenician, a Semitic people from the eastern Mediterranean. Ankhenation and Hatshepsut were Egyptian Africans, not from sub-Saharan (black) African stock. Egypt's only black pharaohs comprised the 25th Dynasty (747-656 B.C.E.) when Nubians from Kush seized the throne. Shame on Mr. Rogers for this appalling piece of revisionist history.

Summary: THANK YOU!
Review: I thank the Gods and the Goddesses for having led me to read this book! I already knew some, yet I know more than I knew then, and indeed, by looking back to our ancesstors, is then that Africa can be awakened!

This book informs about the GREAT Black figures whom many were labelled as White or Arab. It includes Zenobia, Lokman, Aesop the Ethiopian, Piankhi, Cleopatra, Al Jahiz, Chaka, and a WHOLE LOT MORE.

I am so glad I have both copies (volume 1 and 2) before they get "extinct".

This is a legacy that for eternity I will treasure! Its about setting some records, if not most records, straight.

THANK YOU MR ROGERS AND THE PUBLISHERS!

Summary: Ahead of his time
Review: JA Rodgers was ahead of his time when it came to historical reserch. He exposed alot of things that even in our xenophobic world we are afriad to talk about. He discovered through his reserch many of the great people of the past was infact blacks, and that they had been covered up by white wash over centuries. People should read these books with an open mind, because it explains alot in our soceity that are very race conscious people. I learned about Al Jahiz though him and he taught me about many great people I had never even heard of. I never knew about lokman the southern Arabian sage that was considered one of the wisest men. I never knew about the black vikings in this book called blaumen. The book also discussed how many people of the royal family have indeed black ancestry and how they have tried to hide these facts. Get this book to expose the truth and check out other JA Rodgers books.

Summary: Africana Studies Must Have
Review: This volume serves as comprehensive introduction to black history. Volume 1 details the lives of outstanding blacks of Africa, Asia, and the Pre-Christ era. Includes Akhenaten, Aesop, Hannibal, Hatshepsut, Nzingha, and many others. It is written in an easy, narrative manner. Includes bibliography.

The particular strength of this book, and its companion volume is that you don't need to be a history fan to read it. Many African history books are written for scholars, and well, they are boring as all get-out. JA Rogers wrote his work for the everyday man. I would highly recommend this for anyone with kids whom you want to introduce to the history of the African diaspora. I think it's quite valuable for Middle School teachers, and those home-schooling kids that age.

Although some of Rogers' work is controversial (some of it was not adequately documented) this work is has a strong foundation. His work is always interesting to read, and with this one, you are left with a firm sense of history.

You won't be disappointed, unless the fact that there were Kings, Queens, Scholars, and Religious leaders in Africa disturbs you.
