Rating: Summary: STUNNING NON-FICTION AT ITS BEST! Review: This is a remarkable and well-written piece about a time in America's history that has been forgotten. At times it reads like a novel and maintained my interest throughout. It was satisfying to appreciate that, despite the faults of our political system, it is so much better now than it was just three or four generations ago. I highly recommend this outstanding book.
Rating: Summary: Forgotten President Review: This is a wonderful book. It is a compelling story of James Garfield who was an accidental president. Garfield was only in office in 6 months and most of that was spent battling to have offices filled. The background of life in the White House. The lack of security and the open atmosphere of the White House is so interesting when compared with what we know have. Also the story of the Nominating Convention is compelling. The studies of Chester Arthur, Blaine and Senator Conklin are wonderful. Meeting these individuals is a bonus in this story. This is a wonderful book.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful, one of a kind read Review: This is an amazing book, and a must have for anyone interested in post civil war America. The 'Stolen election' of 1876, so well covered in 'Fraud of the Century' helped set the stage for the Garfield contest in 1880. Garfield was a former civil war hero who was put onto the nomination floor at the last minute as a compromise between warring republican political factions. His Vice-President, Arthur, was foisted upon the ticket as another compromise. Garfield held great promise until he was gunned down by a lone gunmen, someone whose political fantasies mirroed the machine politics of the day. A wonderful account, very well written, lucid and easy to read, a colorful account that evokes the times and tells the inside story of 'smoke-filled room' politics. A very American book that tells tales about our country and its Democratic nature. Seth J. Frantzman
Rating: Summary: Dark Horse ~ A Wonderful History of Garfield Review: This is one of the best books around about a past American president. Mr. Ackerman writes extremely well, and brings to life the subject of James A. Garfield's short presidency. The book leaves one sorry that Garfield could not have lived to see out his full term. It is obviously very well researched by an author who has done extensive research into the tragic events which led to the second of four assassinations of U.S. presidents. The feud between two factions of the Republican Party at the time of the Garfield presidency was one that included this great human tragedy. Anyone who has a love for American history should pick up this book. It's a must-read!
Rating: Summary: Dark Horse sheds new light on a political assassination Review: What a great read! As a post-Civil War lover, I am more than estatic that another book has been written on that time period. Congrats to the author! Keep 'em coming!
