Summary: SWING IT COMMENT
Review: "SWING IT" YES, THE ANDREWS SISTERS KNEW HOW TO SWING. NO OTHER VOCAL TRIO BEFORE OR SINCE HAS EVER CAPTURED THE ESSENCE OF HOW TO MAKE A SONG SWING OR BOUNCE. NO MATTER WHAT THEY SANG SWING, PRETTY BALLADS, COUNTRY, SHOW TUNES, CHRISTMAS AND EVEN HYMS, HAS THERE EVER BEEN THAT UNIQUE BLEND THAT IS THEIRS AND THEIRS ALONE. ONCE YOUR HOOKED ON THEIR STYLE YOU CAN NEVER GET ENOUGH! JOHN SFORA'S BOOK CAN NOT BE A BETTER TRIBUTE TO THIS AMERICAN POP GROUP. WHILE YOU READ HIS BOOK YOU SENCE HIS TRUE AND DEEP ADMIRATION FOR THESE POP ICONS. HIS BOOK TAKES YOU ON A JOURNEY INTO THE LIVES AND TIMES AND THE ERA OF PATTY, MAXENE,AND LAVERNE. THE DISCOGRAPHY OF THE MANY SONGS THEY RECORDED WILL WET YOUR APPETITE FOR CONTINUED LISTENING PLEASURE.

Summary: "Swing It" SWINGS!
Review: A factual, interesting, & entertaining read on the seldom written Andrews Sisters. As the first of its kind it offers a wealth of information on the very popular vocal group who surpassed Elvis & the Beatles on the billboard charts. Lots of great photos with Crosby, Sinatra, Dean Martin, Abbott & Costello, Joey Bishop, Red Skelton & "STOOGE" Shemp Howard. Not a tell all by any means but an insightful look into the personal relationship of the sisters by a dedicated fan. Says the Seattle Times in the December 12, 1999 issue, "in addition to thoroughly documenting the Andrews Sisters' musical contribution - and especially their importance during World War II - "Swing It" is also an invaluable record of the pop-music business before rock, before huge arena shows...a time when the musical talents of performers were more important than those of the electronic geniuses that record them. John Sforza has written a readable account of their careers...an impressive amount of detailed research went into this book." Customer reviews that have been posted thus far seem a bit off the mark especially if the reader lived during that exciting era. Lots of nostalgic memories & interesting analysis throughout. Recommended to put you "In the Mood."

Summary: Yawn!
Review: A real plod. This book reads more like somebody's college thesis: factual and flat. Most personal insights are provided by quotes from Maxene which the author must have dug up someplace. It really sheds no new light on any of the three sisters. Viewed as a reference book, it's certainly worth having, since it does document the group's career concisely. It's not an entertaining read, however.

Summary: Second rate at best
Review: Being a huge fan of the Andrews Sisters, I was excited to see a "biography" had finally been written about them, but as I read the book, I was very disappointed. If you're looking for their life story, all you're going to get is second and third hand quotes from aquaintances, and nothing more. Not one family member was directly interviewed. It does serve as a good reference for their discography, but that's about it.I suggest you borrow it from the library instead of buying.

Summary: Does this book jump?
Review: Bob Hope was quoted in People Magazine saying that "the room jumped when the Andrews Sisters came in." How true! These swinging, singing, sisters of the World War II era are an important part of the musical history of that day. However, this book does not "jump." It's cold and impersonal and shows very little feeling and excitement of the times and the Andrews Sisters. One wonders if the author is even a fan. The book does offer a reference source to a young generation who are just now discovering the swing era and the Andrews Sisters. I only wish Patty Andrews could finish her book. She's the one who could give us the Andrews Sisters story.

Summary: I love it!
Review: Books about the Andrews Sisters are few and far between. Patty's own autobiography is merely the Holy Grail - something we desire but may never see. Sforza's work fills this void brilliantly and feeds the appetite of all of us who love these three gals.

His painstaking research is obvious evidence for his own personal love for the trio. Not to mention his taking the moral high ground by highlighting the Sisters' careers. He did not seek to expose their personal lives as the muckrakers would like to see. I, for one, am not a fan of this Jerry Springer generation.

His discography knocked my socks off. I'm using it to try to fill the holes in my own collection. And the pictures remind me of those beautiful gals, the way I like to remember them.

I highly recommend this work.

Summary: Andrews Sisters: Anxiety?
Review: I ordered the book. I was excited to know that there are others that enjoy the Andrews Sisters. After reading it, I found that the author repeated, over and over, the rifts between the sisters. Read the book. For all of us; music should be heard. "Love your music lots! --
