Rating: Summary: has good spots, and bad spots, and going half-mad spots.... Review: As much as I love Jimmy Buffett, I really could care less what he carries in his airplane, or about his misadventures in buying a backpack. He says in the prologue that he writes in a "stream- of-consciousness" style, and that is certainly accurate. I only wish he had focussed more attention to details such as his meeting with Bob Dylan rather than describing the hassles of going through customs. I also kept waiting for him to go into being shot at in Jamaica, only to be left high and dry, reading about a bad club sandwich. Anyway, enough of my complaints. Jimmy Buffett is a wonderful, if somewhat drifty, writer. The eloquence and humor with which he composes songs is evident throughout the book. His story about his coming to grips with his father's struggle with Alzheimer's was one of the more touching accounts I have ever read. There are also many poignant moments between the man and his children which is always nice to see. There is a balance between the interesting and the inconsequential in this book, I would say the former outweighing the latter. It is more of a random sampling of anecdotes than a straightforward autobiography (Jimmy seems to be reluctant to cover any of the same ground as last year's unauthorized biography). And like his songs,it is a quick, easy to digest, and still leaves the audience with a few points to ponder.
Rating: Summary: Good book if you are interested in his life Review: I read a lot of the reviews -both the positive and the negative-and I agree with both! If you are interested in Jimmy Buffett, as the man buy the book. If you are interested in an epic Joe Merchant, type novel don't. Be forewarned: if you want to keep your mental image of him then don't read it. It will change your opinion forever. I have always wondered about what kind of person Jimmy, really was, and if his music and books reflected his real life. His book is an excellent journal on his life and how he got to where he is now. The down side of the book is that he is too good at detailing every detail of his life -even to the extent that he describes his affinity for drugs. You may not appreciate this, but then again you might. His details seem to drone on for pages that will leave you wondering if he is just trying to fill pages to meet a deadline so that he can get the balance of the advance for the book. One the positive side, it shows a side of him that I never expected. He is sensitive and a very intelligent person. I would have thought that after all the years on the road with the drugs he would be dull as a rock toward anything other than rock music. (What a stereotype!) The only lasting thought I had after reading the book was that how in the hell is he going to pay for this new life style if his creativity runs out -as it did in this book. I mean , a Cessna Citation and a seaplane and living in Palm beach, FL and a horde of people living off him in one fashion or another cost. I can't imagine having to bring friends along for myself and my wife so that we would have someone to pal around with! But then I'm just another working class dog wishing to hell I was him.
Rating: Summary: A glimse into the world that is Jimmy Buffett Review: In Jimmy Buffett's new book A Pirate Looks at Fourty", Jimmy Buffett takes us by the hand and lets us spend a few hours viewing what it is like to be the king of Parrot Heads and what it took to get there. He takes us from college to working the streets of New Orleans during Vietnam. Furthermore, we see how he went from a child of the 60's to a husband and father of the Eighties and Nineties. It is a fascinating look at Jimmy Buffett that most people have never seen. He narrates the story of his life with humor, sincerity, and honesty. For those of us who are Parrot Heads, this will be a chance to learn more about Jimmy than we could any other way except meeting him. And for those who aren't Parrot Heads it is just as interesting of a story. We are all blessed for the opportunity to experience a part of Jimmy's life.
Rating: Summary: Jimmy Buffett friend of the Rich and Famous Review: This book was a supreme disappointment. I was hoping for light heart verse and amusing antidotes. Instead I received drug stories and boring stories about all the doctors and rich people that Buffett knows. He seems to inject into every story the fact that his friend is either, rich, from a famous family,a doctor, or in some way very successful. Jimmy does not seem to know any people that hold average jobs,or do not consume illegal drugs. He is a bore. Sorry
Rating: Summary: Goes on my "special" bookshelf; a keeper. Review: A gift from my wife on my 48th birthday, I took the book with me on an annual golf pilgramage to Myrtle Beach, SC. Great entertainment. Educational. Inspirational. Cool hooks to past memories. Myrtle Beach, a retirement desination as well as a golf mecca, provided the perfect setting to appreciate the profound contrast: Buffett's late-life boogie versus the "retired" folk and their dance of the living dead. Enjoy life. Read this book.
Rating: Summary: It is the story of the life we have always wanted Review: People who give this a bad review, in their words, DON'T GET IT !! This is to be read for just the thing it is ....a story about the man who all Parrot Heads admire and why we fell in love with him in the first place. We would all love to have the life style this man has and that is why most of us like him in the first place. So please remember that it is not to be taken as a great novel..but as a peak into the life we would like to live.
Rating: Summary: The amazing Buffett Review: Jimmy Buffett has been around, and then back again. He is in a class with 7 other people. He and these other seven people have written the best selling fiction and not fiction novels. He then sings a little bit on top of that. Jimmy Buffett is the best.

Rating: Summary: "One of the Five Books I Have Ever Read" Review: Wow! What a book. Mr. Excitement has done it again. This by far is his best book yet. It was adventurous and breathtaking. I couldn't put it down. One of the few books I will probably ever read more than once. And you guys thought his concerts were good?!? From one Parrot Head to another, believe me when I say, "You Gotta Check It Out".........
