Review: This book changed my whole notion of what Courage is! Sure, it is a powerful attribute to strive for and be admired. It's also a daring act that builds character and saves the day. But as Ms. Martin so beautifully reveals in her collaboration with the women in this book, it is so much more. Her personal style gently lead me through the most intimate and delicate moments in extraordinary women's lives and then on into a world of "being" that I have yet to fully appreciate. The incredible lives of these women have transformed obstacles, transcended circumstance and born witness to things that really matter. But something more was being revealed to me in this book. At first I could barely hear the whisper of what it was, but every time it called to me (and this book literally called to me) the chant became louder. I could almost feel the essence of these women emerging from the pages as I read each story. I was reminded of an earlier time when women gathered together in mythical acts of creation. I actually experienced the chorale of feminine voices as one story lead me to choose the next. The feeling of this book is so uniquely refreshing and completely empowering. It is written in a new and authentic women's style and is truly courageous! Thank you, Katherine Martin for sharing with me what is at the core of courage, the heart of the women you have known. I love this book.

Review: This is a book that tells the stories of women -- some famous, some you've never heard of -- who, at some point in their lives found themselves in situations that terrified them. For some, it was the emotional terror of doing something they did not believe they could do; for some, confronting an abusive relationship; for some, physically accomplishing something that seemed impossibly arduous. Hearing their stories makes you weep. Their courage is often so quiet -- no big fanfare, no publicity, no one else even knows about it. But, sharing those life-changing moments with them changes your own life. Many of their stories inspired me to believe in myself, and reminded me of the everyday love and compassion and commitment that makes humans heroic. I keep this book by my desk, and pick it up whenever I need a burst of encouragement.
