Rating: Summary: Well written, amusing in places, but. . . Review: . . .even her children seem a bit ashamed of what she said about Native Americans. I can accept that her description of the social conditions were a matter of "calling them as she saw them", but the statement that she "[didn't] like Indians and [thought] that it was a wonderful thing that we took this beautiful country away from them" made my part-Cherokee blood boil.
I loved the Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle books, but this is the only one of her adult books I have read. When I re-read it, I always skip that chapter.
Rating: Summary: A BOOK OF WONDERS AND TRUTH Review: This book is a great one for anyone who recognizes truth when they read it. It's comfortable as an old slipper and funny and sad and real---just like life.
Rating: Summary: the real Ma and Pa Kettle Review: After watching all the Ma and Pa Kettle movies with my daughters, I bought this book so we could learn where the stories came from. My daughters enjoyed comparing the characters and scenes from the movies to what was in the book. Betty MacDonald, whom I knew nothing about, amazed me with her sense of humor. My 10-year-old commented on the unexpected twists that often changed a sentence into something totally hilarious. The only negative, other than the unkind portrayal of some characters, is that some sections of description were long and boring. In general, this was a hilarious book, and I'm glad we found it.
Rating: Summary: Practiced eye and careful pen Review: I have read and re-read Betty's book, "Egg and I", and I only wish that it had a wider audience! Betty's writing style is sensitive, descriptive, warm and hilarious. I can almost feel the hovering of the mountains, hear the "yeep" of the baby chicks and I drool when she describes the seafood and method of cooking it that she and Bob enjoyed. Betty may not be Shakespeare, but she has certainly captured life in the earlier day of the Pacific Northwest. I asked my sons (aged 17 and 18) to read it and they have remarked on how much fun Betty's book is! If there is a tougher audience than teen-aged boys I'd like to meet it! In the meantime, if you're looking for a great, yet easy, read pick up "Egg and I".... believe me, you won't be disappointed.
