Rating: Summary: The Egg and I Review: I couldn't put it down. The account of Washington State in it's infancy is worth its weight in gold. Betty MacDonald is absolutely hilarious.
Rating: Summary: One of the funniest books of all times Review: The Egg and I is one of the funniest books of all times. After reading The egg and Betty's other wonderful books I wanted to meet her family and friends and I really met them all. They are as wonderful as in her books. I found out that Betty has fans from all over the world. There are several international fan clubs and societies and the people really adore her work. It's such a masterpiece how she described the everyday life with her family, friends, neighbors. I can read it over and over again. It's so entertaining, witty and wise. I think Betty MacDonald is an unique writer. I don' t think that's an exaggeration. Not at all. Her fans come from all social groups from 9 to 99. Reading THE EGG AND I and her other books is such a gift - a real pleasure and joy. I especially adore her descriptions about the nature in the Pacific Norhtwest. It's such a delight.
Rating: Summary: Memories of School Review: As a schoolgirl in Edinburgh Scotland, our English teacher was leaving - it was 1949 and we gave her The Egg and I as a leaving present. We were in first form 11 years of age. We thought it quite a daring gift. I started on Betty Macdonald then and thoroughly enjoyed her books, her sister Mary's book and also her daughter's books. OK her views on native Americans are dated and not pc but the books are a great joy.
Rating: Summary: I Love Betty! Review: Betty MacDonald Rocks. I've loved all of her "adult"books, ever since I found one in my parent's basement back in1977. They're not literature, but they're very, very readable and very, very funny. Yes, I know her views towards the Native Americans wasn't the best - but let's not throw the baby out with the bath water. She was a product of her times after all, and many of us probably would have been much less enlightened in that same situation. Because of that, I'd actually recommend this book for kids, because while her opinions on Native Americans isn't PC, it's certainly not vitriolic - and it would be a great topic for discussion with your kids on what they are reading and what they are thinking.
Rating: Summary: AND THE BOYTH WON'T HELP Review: I can't get paw kettle out of my mind. I got this book at garage sale, and would recommened it to anyone.
Rating: Summary: EGG & I is a hit! Review: For three days I read this book with a grin on my face and laughter in my belly. Towards the end of the book I was actually laughing out loud, with no one around to hear my glee. Betty describes, in wonderful detail, life on a chicken ranch and life with neighbors and various animals. Since I grew up in the country and my parents on a farm, I could relate to her wonderful descriptions of the sunrise and wild animals. I enjoyed it thoroughly and recommend this delightful read to anyone. (And I learned a few things about chickens as well.)
Rating: Summary: great relaxing book to read Review: Betty MacDonald sense of dry humor is relaxing and refreshing. This book lets you wander off to places where time does not matter. Light reading. I enjoyed it throughly.
Rating: Summary: Not a book for children! Review: I had read and loved all of Betty MacDonald's other novels before I picked THE EGG AND I up to read. While it is written well, it is not her best work and should not be pushed on children. The history of the Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest has been brutal enough without an ignorant white woman's veiws being passed down to further generations. There are so many wonderful books out there, especially for kids, this book is detrimental to the development of positive outcome in the Native American experience.
Rating: Summary: A great read aloud. Review: My husband and I sometimes read a book together, out loud, a chapter each night. This is a good choice for that kind of reading. We both laughed out loud many times. It's fast, breezy and light, a slice of life. Funny and well written. OK, so her veiws of Native Americans were really dated, but I don't think that ruins the book for all time! I'm sorry for those of you who miss out on it, it's not as well known as it should be. A very fun read.
Rating: Summary: A real "slice of life" from the era -- a sensational talent Review: I first read 'The Egg & I' when I was 11 years and now, atage 40, I cannot count the number of times I have re-read it. It'slike an old friend. Betty's style is so fresh and easy to read "like snipping off a bit of herself and sending it to me" (readers of "Onions in the Stew" will recognise that line!) Anyway, back to Betty, I adore her and would love to see all her books in print. She was a tolerant person when she had the knowledge. It is a classic. Get your teenagers to read all her books. I guarantee, they will develop a love and enjoyment of reading just from her.
