Summary: Not what I had expected
Review: I think I expected something more applicable. Here we have wonderful titles for each of the chapters implying that there will be life lessons offered for the reader. Instead, you get an in depth look into Iyanla Vanzant's experiences and struggles. She didn't get where she is today on an easy path, that is for certain. Still, I would have liked a little more about how these lessons apply to all of us. Also, I found myself uncomfortable with certain parts of the story . . . Vanzant clearly has a very loving relationship with her older daughter and the sometimes blatant favoritism she shows this child made me feel sad for the other two children. I am sure that is not her intention in sharing but I still felt saddened, not uplifted, by this book.

Summary: A Hard Life Growing Up-Slow to learn lessons in life
Review: I agree with the other reviewers. The poem made me shed tears. I loved the first chapter. Then, after I read the entire book and knew the WHOLE story, I think that Ms. Vanzant should have attempted to end each chapter with her life lessons a little better. I felt each chapter was wonderfully written, then as the climax of the chapter peaked, it ended. There I was hanging from the climax wanting a better explanation of the lesson that she learned in life and because she wrote this later in life, what should she have taught her children, students, etc.

Summary: Excellent! Very Inspirational!
Review: I have all of her books but this is the one I could not put down. She is AMAZING! She is such an Inspiration to me because Iyanla has been through so much and she still continues to give back. She is like a Big Sister, telling you where she has been and to stop you from following her path. And at the same time showing you the right way ! She is so Amazing!

Summary: 2 Thumbs Up!! Remarkable!!
Review: I've heard alot about how good Iyanla's books are, so I had to read for myself. Now, I will have to order ALL of her books. I'm very impressed. Even though she went through MUCH, MUCH termoil, she never lost faith. Her book brought tears to my eyes. I would love to one day take a seminar & meet her.

Summary: Today you are making me cry
Review: I've never seen or heard the writer. She is the contradiction of my culture and heritage. Yet her words replaced emotions I have felt for over 40 years. She opened doors and flood gates that allowed me to realize the damage done to me by the insensitivity and stupidity of others. The Book was a gift from my Brother and Sister-in-Law that read - "A book to mend the Soul" The author has truly started the process. Abuse knows no socio or economical boundaries. In her words - I found the world I was raised in and recognize an educational system that failed us both, this a common bond that fails most abused children.

Summary: Smiles, tears, strength, celebration
Review: Dear Iyanla...thank you! This book moved my soul like no other ever has. I pray that Rhonda (the young child Iyanla) rests in peace and celebrate the wonderful person Iyanla who shares her pain to help others. If you're trying to figure out who you are or why you're here...this book brings wonderful insight about the lessons of life.

Summary: Wonderfully instructive
Review: It took me a while to finish this book because of its sheer emotional impact. It starts with a wonderful poem that describes the shedding tears that had long been held back. Iyanla lays herself bare before her readers and revisits her coming of age. With the harsh life that this woman endured -- sexual abuse, teen pregnancy, spousal abuse, poverty -- it is amazing that she emerged with her sanity, let alone the ability to minister to others.

The author draws upon her experiences to show her audience how to look for lessons in life's unpleasantness. She showed us how her upbringing caused her to internalize some damaging messages from her cruel grandmother, absentee father and an array of abusive lovers. The author explains her transformation from the much-abused Rhonda, to Iyanla the Yoruba Priestess and acclaimed author. And she does it in such a way that the readers know that they too can transcend their circumstances.

I found myself in tears a couple of times while reading this book. Tears may sometimes be viewed as a sign of weakness, but this is a tome about strength and courage. I applaud Iyanla's courage and thank her for sharing her wisdom.

Summary: I cried when I read this!
Review: This book of poems and other reading is one of the best that I have ever read. Iyanla Vanzant uses descriptive language to get her point across and to create an everlasting image in your mind. Her writing makes Maya Angelou look like a rookie, when it comes to describing the way she really feals inside. If your looking for an OUTSTANDING book, this should be your choice

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Intense
Review: Iv'e always been a fan of Inyanla's work since her very first book Interiors. Most of what was in that one is similar to this one but on a more reflective level but the effect is still the same very deep & thought provoking!
