Summary: The Finest Collection of Works by Hunter S. Thompson
Review: I first read this book when it came out and it is one of the few books I return to read over the years. Of Thompson's "Best Of's" (he has three "best of" volumes the author titles as "Gonzo Papers"), The Great Shark Hunt is easily the best. The book has very rare articles by the author in his formative years in So. America, as well as his best work from the height of his talent and fame (the 1970s). A good companion piece to "Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas" (the author's finest work and recently inducted as a Modern Library piece) and his insider look with "Hells Angels". The man has a mastery of the English language in a simple, flowing, humorous way

Summary: If you can only have one Thompson book, this is the one.
Review: I have read most of Hunter's work through the years. From the articles in Rolling Stone & Playboy, to his many books ,if you can only own one Thompson book, this is the one. Brilliant & funny the best of the best. Its sad that the drugs that made the genius have now destroyed it. But if you want to see Thompson at the top of his game this is the book for you.

Summary: The Gonzo Grail
Review: I know Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is the "Great Work" for which he will be forever remembered and deservedly so. However, Shark Hunt is a kind of Penguin Reader of the Essential HST and as such is the indespensable survey of the glory years.

I read this six or eight times between the ages of 19 and 22. If you have a brain ripe for warping, crack this one some time.

Summary: Like it should have been
Review: Merely the latest in the long line of exceptionally talented goons who, because they are totally incompatiable with society and thus have been kicked out, are the only ones truly capable of writing about our society. Lucretius, Juvenal, Chaucer, Swift... the list is endless. The Great Shark Hunt is possibly the finest compendium of satire by a modern author, because, let's face it, proper Gonzo literature is fiction, and apparently that is the best way to tell the truth. Furthermore, it is journalism of the highest quality, that seems to relate an eyewitness account in the most hair-raising manner, and whose level of grammatical perfection is matched by few. That Thompson has gone over the top in attempting to outrage as many people as possible, is undeniable, but this collection reflects a time when such behaviour was ourrageous; maybe now we are indifferent, but The Great Shark Hunt should still be an inspiraton to us all.

Summary: Excellent
Review: The book is incredible, the first Thompson I was exposed to was Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas the motion picture, which was incredible. Then I read the book and it blew my mind even further. Now with the First volume of the Gonzo Papers I can say that Thompson has one of the most incredible minds of our time. Hes truly a treasure of the 20th century and will continue to be in the 21st. Hes an inspiration. A true individual. I recommend HST's writing to all who enjoy the eccentric over whats known as "normal."

Summary: The Great Shark Hunt
Review: The Great Shark Hunt is one of the best books I have ever read. Hunter S. Thompson has a very uniqe style of writing. He uses alot of metaphors and phrases that will make the book entertaining to young and old readers. I would recommend this book to anyone above the age of 16 only because of his word usage and harsh language.

His life is very interesting. As you read through the pages, you get hooked instantly. Each page is very unpredictable. If you enjoy comedy then this is a great book for you. Hunter also has uniqe political beliefs that are kind of outragious but in way makes you think about our society. He really makes you think about your life and beliefs on different things. So if you think your ready for a very long but very funny biography of one of the craziest men in the United States, then The Great Shark Hunt is just for you.

Summary: The Great Shark Hunt
Review: The Great Shark Hunt is one of the best books I have ever read. Thompson's writing style and political beliefs just makes you never let go. He's so unpredictable; you'll be very impressed as you start to enjoy the way he writes. The metaphors and phrases that he uses make him so much more unique then any other writer. This book is very straight forward but keeps you hooked. When he describes our former presidents, it really makes you think about a lot of things. He makes you wish that you could be different, and have a different attitude towards everything. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys foul language and funny stories about one of the craziest men in the United States. His stories are just outrageous and unbelievable, but it's all true. This book has inspired me to just take life by the horns and never look back. So whenever your in a book store look around and check out this book, you may like it or you may not, but it wouldn't hurt to spice things up a bit and take a crazy trip into Hunter S. Thompson's head. I sure enjoyed the trip, you should too.

Summary: How the Mighty Have Fallen
Review: The work contained in this volume shows definitively what made Thompson one of the great journalists of his time. From the early reports from his various journeys onward, he proves a master of prose second to none. If you have only read his recent work and wonder what the hubbub is all about, you must read this. The work contained here makes the vacancy and shallowness of his latest scribblings all the more tragic and pathetic. But for truly great American writing, his is the place. Thompson truly was the best of his time.

Summary: Selah
Review: There are very few books I'd give a 10 to, but this is one of them. You can either overdose and read it all in one go (and many of you will) or occasionally snack on its lunacy.

Thompson lost it years ago - mainly because he was so adored he didn't really have to make an effort anymore - but the contents of The Great Shark Hunt show him at his best, when instead of being content to comment on the world from far off in Woody Creek, he went out, grabbed it by the scruff of its neck, and shoved drugs down the beast's maw
