Rating: Summary: Inspiration Review: I read Tom Jordan's book in its first incarnation back in 1980. I'm glad to see it updated with more photos and information, though I wish someone would do an in depth biography on Pre the man. Steve Prefontaine has served me as inspiration to run since I first read this book, even though he was already gone when I got to know his life. I would recommend this book to anyone who desires to run. I also recommend both of the movies that have been made of his life. They round out his character in a way the book does not, and while they cover many of the same incidents each portrays different things too. It's like watching Pre come alive. Read the book then watch the movies. You can't go wrong.
Rating: Summary: Steve Prefontaine - the greatest runner ever Review: I was amazed to find and watch the movie on the runner legend Steve Prefontaine whom I didn't formerly know (are there two movies on him? ; this one had Billy Crudup as Steve); it was a great characterization of the fiercy and passionate personality of Steve and his too short life. However, the book on "Pre" while worth reading too doesn't reach the expressive and experiental peak of the movie; in order to achieve such an intensivity and emotional drive the author shoulod have been a master of the first order (maybe Don DeLillo would have managed); but as it stands the book does well its job - and provides detailed information on the runner hero, his competitions and private life. I am myself from Finland which also had once great long distance runner - like Lasse Viren - but the charm and passion of Pre (about whom I really didn't know almost anything before I happened to see the movie on video) were so awesome that I became immeaditely a dedicated Pre fan and cried while seeing Pre to finish as fourth in Munchen while Viren took it all; and so I cried even more bitterly to see him die tragically in that car accident. There is no other runner to match with Pre - and so I am now establihsing a jogging club which carries his golden name and honors his golden memory: "Steve Prefontaine jogging club" - and the book on Pre is the official code and bible of the philosophy and values of the club.
Rating: Summary: PRE: A heartbreaking story of human will and inspiration. Review: In PRE, Tom Jordan uses common and simple language to chronicle the life of the incredible Steve Prefontaine. Whereas this book does not attempt to be a literary masterpiece, Mr. Jordan has done the reader an enormous favor by putting between covers this heartbreaking story of remarkable human will and spirit, by which we may all feel motivated and empowered and certainly inspired. Of special significance to me, a native Oregonian, is the fact that Steve Prefontaine was a true Oregon boy from a small Oregon town. Steve's characteristics of being independent, hard working, a bit of a rebel, and charismatic all at once, embody the pride and essence of what it means to be a true Oregonian. The story of PRE makes me want to live each day more fully in some way, rather than to simply exist. For the athlete and non-athlete alike, this story is well worth reading. It may even change your life.
Rating: Summary: No matter how many times I read this book, I feel inspired! Review: Next to my Mother who raised me Steve Prefontaine is my only hero. For the last 23 years I've been a distance runner and there's been plenty of days when it hasn't been easy. But everytime I pick up this book and read a few pages I'm out the door before I know it. This book isn't just about the greatest distance runner that the US ever produced. It's about believing in yourself and giving all you have no matter what you do in life. I have an old copy that sits on my desk and no matter how many times I read it I'm still inspired. Steve Prefontaine lives on through this book. It tells the story of not only his triumphs on the track but off it as well. His legacy are the people who he touched and embrace what he stood for, courage.
Rating: Summary: Career of legendary runner Steve Prefontaine Review: PRE tells the story in words and pictures of the late Steve Prefontaine, who before his death in 1975 in an auto accident, held every American distance running record from 2000 to 10,000 meters. This 1997 edition has 75 photos, most of which have never before been published, along with additional commentary from today's stars about the influence the outspoken Pre had on their careers. PRE is a book for anyone interested in a true American running original
Rating: Summary: Prefontaine is the greatest man ever! Review: Pre was a optimistic goal plunger with guts. He said things like~I dont run a race to see who is the fastest, I only run a race to see who has the most guts~ He has inspired me to run, and now I run every morning, I am in 7th grade and hope to cary on his legendary performance
Rating: Summary: Inspiring Tale of A Running Legend Review: Probably one of the most inspiring biographical works I have ever read. The world was changed forever when Pre died. Great use of pictures as well as stories from those who new Pre to tell the story of the man that was a legend at 24 and still wasn't at his peak.
Rating: Summary: Go Pre -- and Go Yourself Review: Reading this book psyches me up to run 5k's. As a University of Oregon freshman, Steve Prefontaine won the National (NCAA) 3 mile track race and set an American record despite running with 10 stitches in his foot. From there he only got better. If you are athletic and competitive, you will be motivated by learning about Steve Prefontaine, who remains America's favorite track star. The two Pre movies ('Prefontaine' and 'Without Limits') give his life the broad brush. This book fills in some details. Enjoy.

Rating: Summary: Motivator Review: Reading Tom Jordan's "Pre" makes you feel that the legend is still alive. Not like attempts made to reproduce the runners life on TV, this book is a success. Starting out with Pre as a boy, the book leads you through most parts of his unfortunately short career. It explains Pre's thoughts and relationship to other people. This book is easy to read, easy to understand but will benefit you in many ways. You will understand what it means to be a great runner, the pressure involved in it and what kind of pain a runner feels during practice and races.
