Rating: Summary: Assata Review: I recently became interested in what the Black Panthers were about, and have read a couple other books by Panthers in pursuit of that interest. The others I've read, Seize The Time (Bobby Seale) and A Taste Of Power were both insightful books, Assata told me much more in terms of things to also read about to help me understand more. For instance, the revelations about the Civil War and why it really happened, and about how the FBIs COINTELPRO program really affected the Party and its members and the establishment media. This book really was an eye-opener. Very Recommended.
Rating: Summary: Dope book Review: If you're expecting buttery smooth lyricism - suck it up. Ms. Shakur's autobiography speaks truth, and ain't nothing about truth necessarily buttery smooth. She weaves phases of her past in a comprehensive way. And her story represents a truthful and eye-opening account of the American (or as Ms. Shakur would say - "amerikan") judicial system. It exposes the harsh realities of prison life but leaves young revolutionaries with inspiration and old revolutionaries with a reason to stick it to the man - again. Read this ya'll.
Rating: Summary: Our History Review: Learn about Assata's life so that it won't happen to you. This is a classic piece of African American history.
Rating: Summary: A Classic Work of Black Identity Review: Not nearly enough attention is being given to Assata's autobiography. Like the "Autobiography of Malcolm X", this is a powerfully written book about how an African activist person develops a cultural identity, whereby she pulls off the shackles of internalized racist views she is taught to have of herself and others to become someone who understands her cultural identity and it what it means to love one's self and her people. This book should be taught to all African students in this country. It not only addresses important themes/issues about White supremacy and police brutality, but also more importantly how culture is a weapon against injustice. We're lucky that Assata was able to escape the prison of America, for now we have her narrative as a source of inspiration and insight into what it means to develop a sense of self and to side with justice rather injustice.
Rating: Summary: amazing Review: The autobiography of Assata Shakur ranks among the top of the list of books that citizens of the United States should read. This book shows the development of a young girl victimized by racism and sexism in the Jim Crow South and the "liberal" north into a warrior and freedom fighter. This book provides the reader with a living, breathing example of what happened to the victims of COINTELPRO. The story of her life, struggle, sacrifices, and victory should be as important as The Autobiography of Malcolm X in terms of its affect on future generations. This is a must read for ANYONE interested in understanding the Black Panthers, COINTELPRO, or the dual oppression of being a woman of African descent in the United States.
Rating: Summary: Assata relates her experience well Review: The best part of this book for me was just learning about what made Assata who she is - the growing up years - the experiences that so many children of color can understand - the development. Assata has a knack for relating well in that way. This book gave me the opportunity to also understand the rough trial experience that Assata went through on her many court cases but left out a great deal of information about what really led up to Assata being in that position. Who was really involved in the shootings, if at all? And the ending! All you realize at the end is that she is no longer in prison - and I understand that she couldn't explain how she got out but there are so many things that you wonder about after you close the book. One good thing may be that it leads you to seek out more information about the whole experience - what happened with Huey Newton, what about Angela Davis, and the Black Panthers? Part of my problem with a book like this is it can get you excited about what it stands for - revolution, drastic change and then you're finished with the book and you have to go back to the same life within the system and it leaves you with an uneasiness when you realize that there is no way to practically apply it to your known existence - its all or nothing. On the other hand, that may be why it's important.

Assata Shakur went through alot of things as to so many other black leader just for us. I'm a young black girl and I love Assata honestly with my whole heart. The book is tuly excellent I never wanted to put it down. I encourage everyone of every race to read it and to be open minded to the fact that its real. Just read it in the fact that if you have ever been in pain, Assata understands.
Rating: Summary: The revolution starts within Review: This book has been my source of inspiration. Assata never gives up the fight, in spite of all the oppressive forces surrounding her. It is an excellent account of the other side of FBI conspiracy, you catch a glimpse of the person in the wanted posters. A definite must read for anyone interested in black nationalism and revolutionary forces.
