Rating: Summary: Unbelievable Review: I felt as if a lightbulb went off in my head as I read this book. For years I believed what they told me...believing that the amerikan government was MINE. I believed that the Panthers and Black Liberation Army were evil, and that Assata was a murderer. How ignorant of me. I am now a more informed person, an informed black woman. As I read this, I researched the "facts" that Assata included in this auto-bio, and to my surprise..they all panned out. My life has been changed. Every page of this book, told my own story...Thank you for sharing your story Assata...you have motivated a new generation of revolutionaries!"Our desire to free ourselves, has got to manifest itself in everything we are and do...." -assata shakur
Rating: Summary: The Truth Review: I felt compelled to write this letter, because this book is how black people in amerika really struggled back in the the late 60's early 70's. As a black young female, I feel our youth today has no idea half of the drama that our ancestors went through. We need to take the time with our children and read the stories of yester year. It may seem harsh at first, but then when they realize the struggles from the past they will appreciate where they are now. I am so glad I read this book. If it wasn't for the brother Common, showing me the light, I don't think I would have ever heard of Assata Shakur. That's what we need, more youth sharing our history; good and bad. We need to look at our for ourselves. Don't be like me at 24 and just now starting to get into my true roots. But better late than never. Peace and blessing.#
Rating: Summary: This book was an incredible expierence Review: I had been referred by so many people to read this book and had heard so much about it that I decided to give it a try. Assada sends you on a true journey of her real life events that keeps you captivated from cover to cover. There was never a dull moment in this book. I am no where a big reader, but I could not put this book down. I finished it in five days time (a personal record for my non-reader self). Anyone who is the least bit interested about the revolutionary movement, the life of a political prisoner, or just wants a good read should get this book. It is well worth it. I'd give it double my score if it were possible
Rating: Summary: Tupac Connection Review: I have heard that Assata is the aunt of famous rapper, Tupac Shakur. Is this true? Is their any mention of Tupac in her books???
Rating: Summary: A Blessing... Review: I just completed the Autobiography of Assata ("she who struggles") Shakur ("the thankful one"). As the other reviewers before me have written, it tells an eye-opening story that is often left hidden under the surface-unspoken in mass media. This story leaves a very powerful message, and offers a sense of empowerment--a desire to struggle and do MORE for the liberation of the oppressed.
I consider her work a Blessing because through her life, and now her words, she is teaching today's youth about the struggle that we have abandoned for complacency. We no long struggle for liberation of our people; rather we struggle for the insignificant, the ridiculous. Our vision is blurry with fads and falsehoods, preventing the clarity of mind to truly see what we need to see, hear what we need to hear, and struggle for what we really NEED to struggle for.
I think every Black man and woman in america should read this book... you will not look at your position in America the same.
Rating: Summary: Simply Genius Review: I loved this book. I picked it up not knowing what to expect about this women, but after reading it I came away changed. Assata's story revolves mostly around her transfer from Prison in New York and New Jersey and the conditions she faced. These were all shocking, especially because I live in New Jersey. She goes into her past as well, detailing her experiences with leftist, and the Black Panther Party. She reveals these in a more objective stance, and she dispells the myth that the Black Panther Party was perfect and why she left. My only real complaint is that she doesn't explain enough about the Black Liberation Army, and never, for security reasons, says who shot the officer on the turnpike.
Rating: Summary: Inspiring Review: I read this book for a class that I am taking, as an assigned book review. I had heard Assata's name before but knew little about who she was. I too, heard the song by Common and was intrigued. I decided to take the opportunity to learn about Assata while fulfilling a requirement of my Political Science course. My instructor felt that the book would be relevant and approved my choice. We don't understand how little we know until we talk to people from other countries, my instructor, an Argentine who lived in the UK, knew who she was right offhand. However, several of my peers have not. I thought the book was very inspiring and informative. She is a great example of strength and determination, as well as self respect. The only complaints that I have is that the book went back and forth between past and present, in a manner that was slightly confusing. I also found that the book really only scratched the surface, which is often true in autobiographies. I think that so much was focused on the trial details that there was a lack in detail about the time in her life when she was active in the Black Panthers. Overall, I found the book well written and am interested in learning more as a result.
Rating: Summary: Power to the people... Review: I read this book some years ago, but the impact that it had on me remains strong even till this day. I found this book to be very inspirational and I believe this book will be an inspiration to anyone who reads it. It is not a book based solely upon Black radicalism, but it is based upon the strength and courage of a black women that had to endure many set backs, but managed to overcome these obstacles and maintain some degree of sanity. I would reccommend this book to anyone who needs an emotional uplift.
