I should start by saying that I did enjoy the book, but I was a little disappointed. The most obvious criticism would be that Christopher Reeve is an actor, not a writer, and that really shows in his book. I thought he spent too much time on his acting career and his studies, but I'm sure that people who are interested in acting as a career would love that part of his story. I really appreciated his honesty in this book. First, I loved his sense of humor about Superman, the role that made him so famous. He describes with delight his making fun of Superman on Saturday Night Live, his belief that Superman III was "mostly a misconception", and he says that "the less said about Superman IV the better." More touching is his honesty about his weaker moments after the accident when he couldn't find a reason to live, and he tried to make life miserable for those around him. His pain and his hope become very real as you read this book. A lot of the power of Christopher Reeve's story is hearing him tell it. Reeve spoke at my college convocation the day before graduation, and I was so moved by his speech that I went and bought the book that day (they had it in the University Book Store - go figure). I think that the audiobook, which Reeve reads himself, would communicate much more of his courage and strength. While not phenomenal, the book is a good choice.

This book is an inspiration for the able-bodied and disabled alike. As a journalist, I was skeptical about Reeve's claims that cures for spinal-chord injuries would occur in the near future. I pre-judged him to be overly optimistic. But he presents hard medical-research facts that point toward these cures. Now I'm convinced he's a practical man who bases his optimism on scientific solutions, not on religious ones. In the book, he weaves a bevy of medical and political information with meaningful anecdotes about his personal life and professional career. The book is quite an accomplishment and a well-paced read.

Review: This book is a testament to the courage and strength it takes to be dealt an almost fatal blow and come away stronger than he was before. Reeve takes us through his life and shows us just how this accident effected his personality and his heart, as well as the obvious physical aspects. I walked away feeling I knew Christopher better than I ever could have other wise. His words draw the reader in to his thoughts, and the reader walks away feeling priveleged to know Superman on a deeper level. Christopher Reeve IS Superman. He writes about his embarassment of "Superman" being struck down so easily, but his experience is just a way of showing us how even Superman has a tough time in this world. We each must fight our own demons. Each of us has it in us to overcome our challenges, and on the way, we have to clear the path for those who will follow us. I found the most touching part to be when Reeve realizes that people love him and each person is worth loving in return just because of that.

You feel that you are there with him on his hospital bed as he courageously breathes for half an hour without a respirator. I just don't know how he did it. Perhaps it takes a tragedy to bring out the greatness in a man.To be honest, Reeve's career before the accident is not very interesting. The good part is that at least Reeve presents everything honestly. You get to trace his path from his days as an obnoxious youth, through his days at Juilliard, quick rise in fame to Superman, and then a long slump. Overall, this is a good book and I enjoyed listening to him read the book himself.

What you gain when you get to succed this kind of task, is courage. This is a personal and moving experience on how to retrieve the will to live. Reading it will only bring hope to your heart, letting you know tha nothing is impossible.

I liked it so much that I carried it around with me and alternated sightseeing with small but delicious doses of insightful reading. What's so great? Reeve's ability to make you empathize with him instead of coming across as hopelessly self-pitiful. Sure, he's rich and famous, and thus not the typical accident victim, but that shouldn't make anyone scoff at him. This autobiography is about his entire life, from youth to present. The honest, insightful way in which he conveys his experiences, the meaning he finds in them, and his love for his family sometimes make you forget that you're reading about a movie star. This Superman is human. Pair this gripping story with eloquent writing, and you've got a masterpiece.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Superman is still himself! Review: Christopher Reeve gives us a frank account of his life, and his struggles trying to lead a normal life again after his devastating accident. This book is more than a self wallowing "take-pity-on-me" kind of book. Instead, Reeve makes his readers know that he has accepted his condition and rather than wallow in self pity, he is going to do everything possible to walk again. I sincerely hope that Christopher Reeve and all the millions of patients suffering from paralysis of one form or another may one day regain control of their limbs and bodies again. Great job Christopher!
